Westminster, that cornerstone of staid traditionalism, has truly busted out of character in recent years. Remember when even the mildest inquiry about maybe… someday moving the show out of Midtown or possibly to a more amenable season received a swift and unpleasant response? Those heretical ideas got slapped down pronto. But lately, it’s hard to keep pace with the mind bending changes going on with everything from format to location.
From the split venue to the introduction of top tier Obedience and Agility competitions, this bastion of convention has suddenly gone all cutting edge. And yes, like all big changes, Westminster’s new ideas have hit some rough patches. But this club is equally famed for its micromanagement and perfectionism. Handling complications is sort of their trademark.
Last year, when word came that Pier 92 was falling into the Hudson following a cruise ship mishap it triggered immediate speculation about Westminster’s fate. And just like always, everything worked out fine. The club’s unruffled reputation belies the countless obstacles and catastrophes that have befallen the show since 1876. Fires, floods and blizzards are just a few of the complications that have prompted unscheduled changes over the years. But the show must go on, and it always has.
