The Latest on Pier 92

By Amy Fernandez

Anyone who owns a really old house- and I speak from a lifetime of drilldown experience- will concur that nothing is ever simple or straightforward. Start poking around one repair job and …SURPRISE… you are invariably rewarded with a goldmine of brand new, unpleasant discoveries.

Anyway, getting to the old house of the sport of purebred dogs, Westminster; All of us are just starting to like life over at the Piers, and Carnival Cruise Lines had us justifiably upset when they crashed a boat into Pier 92 last summer. Thankfully, no damage done, but as I noted, those piers are damned old. In a formal sense, the actual piers are older than Westminster- and their bragging point is 1877.

Even so, this year marked the first great spectator attendance at the Pier side of Westminster. And in that sense, I guess we were very lucky because just a couple weeks later, things didn’t fare so well for the Armory International Art Show, an equally popular, traditional NYC event, scheduled to start March 7th. A routine safety inspection revealed deterioration undermining the Pier’s structural integrity, forcing the show’s last minute relocation to Pier 90. Like Westminster, advance planning is integral to these major international events. So that was really bad, but there is no need to worry too much just yet.

The Hudson River Piers are ancient and problems like this are …well maybe not routine, but certainly not unprecedented. Remember when the Westside Highway fell down? Ok, maybe that’s not the best example.   Remember five years ago when we were informed that almost 60 percent of the pilings supporting Hudson River Park Pier were in imminent danger of collapse?  It never happened, and they’re fixing it up.

According to Westminster’s Communication Director, Gail Miller Bisher, don’t panic. We reached out to her and were given the following statement: “We are aware of the current status of Pier 92. We are in contact with the management company for updates while researching alternate solutions if Pier 92 is unavailable for the 2020 show. Of course, we will keep the dog sport community updated as the situation resolves itself.”

Hopefully we won’t be moving again, but we have survived worse.  Westminster is like our old, creaky house. We swear a little call the plumber and everything works out fine.
