Life throws us curves balls when we least expect them. You plan a great vacation to the Hawaiian Islands. It’s the first real vacation you have taken since the beginning of Covid. Everything was booked, confirmed, and paid for months ago. Your new bathing suits, beach cover-ups, books, and sandals are packed. You splurged on those new sunglasses you just had to have. The dog sitter is all arranged, too. Your next door neighbors will take in your mail and trash cans. Even the car is filled with gas for the trip to the airport and back. No detail has been overlooked. A parking reservation has been made.
Getting to bed early the night before the trip is important. The alarm will be going off at 3 AM to be certain we’ll get to the airport on time for an early flight. Our luggage is already in the car. The backpack is ready at the door to absorb the last minute items. A large note on the inside of the front door reminds you to set the alarm, the air-conditioning, and the timer for the lights on your smart house system before walking out the door in the morning. Check, check, check, it’s all done and off you go to bed.
That 3 AM alarm goes off on your phone followed by the one you set on the clock radio next to the bed. Jumping out of bed and heading into the bathroom, you remind yourself that finally this long awaited day has come. You are headed to Hawaii! Umm, better check the flight status for any gate changes. Your laptop is open on the dresser ready to slip into the backpack. “WHAT?” you cry out as you see a green screen with a large “RECOVER” staring back at you. Frantically, any and all attempts to restore, reset, or recover are not working. With your phone in hand, you open up the airline app to disclose words you never anticipated, “a worldwide outage of the internet resulting from an update being installed a few hours ago has caused us disruptions to our flights until service is restored.” The message continued, “We are working on the problem which we hope to resolve soon. Please keep checking for updates on the app.”
