By William Given

“Well, honey,” she said excitedly as she exited the ring, “she finally finished. Now, we can breed her and have a litter of puppies.” The husband’s response was, “It only took four years, five months and an odd number of days.” Then he added, “I think that’s a great idea.”

There is, of course, a variety of reasons why it took this bitch so long to earn her championship. We all know the quality of competition is stronger in some breeds than it is in others. The owner may suffer a bit from kennel blindness which prevents her from being able to see and recognize the bitch’s faults for what they are. Maybe, the bitch does not like showing, possesses little or no showmanship and just cannot WOW the judge. It is also possible that there is a combination of reasons such as poor handling and a lack of grooming skills.?It could also be that majors are non-existent in the breed.

In this case, let us focus on the fact that this bitch, though structurally sound and a good representative of her breed, she simply possesses no single trait that could be considered outstanding. Good is not always good enough. We can liken this to the grade C+. Winners Bitch and an AKC championship title is rarely awarded to a C+ bitch. My mentor’s belief, as it relates to judging dogs is, “If better is possible, good is seldom enough.” It is quite reasonable to assume this is a mindset shared by many judges.
