76 – The Annual, 2023-24

By Wayne Cavanaugh

In one wild week, the world of Artificial Intelligence was sent into a tailspin when the board of OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, gave the boot to its CEO, the visionary Sam Altman. Deals and theories ensued, and by the time you read this, Microsoft may or may not have absorbed OpenAI. Explanations for Altman’s departure span the gamut but most hint of the board’s fear that Altman wasn’t concerned enough about the potential dangers of AI. Or something like that. (editor’s note: Altman was reinstated as CEO on November 29, 2023–after this article was written.)

The news sparked my AI interest, so I did a little research, learned how to write efficient queries, created an account, and went to work. To be clear, I have a pedestrian knowledge of AI at best. Fortunately, its open-source framework makes it approachable for almost anyone with a computer, even me, to at least scratch its most basic surface.

Chatbots don’t reason; they just process an extraordinary amount of existing data with freakish speed and make magic by using algorithms to determine which words best follow other words. Yes, that is a gross over-generalization (forgive me, IT people), but you get the idea.

Most of you already use AI while having a “conversation” with a customer service chatbot. Bailey, from AKC’s registration customer service site, for example, or Julia who helped you with your Amazon order are chatbots. They answer your questions using words that statistically follow words to get you the answers you need–most of the time.
