The young people competing in the sport of Junior Showmanship are vitally important to the future of our sport. And, because of that, there are many of us who judge Junior Showmanship that feel it is the most important assignment a judge can have at any show, large or small.

There are also many of us who believe judging Junior Showmanship is the most difficult assignment we can have at a show. Why, you might ask. Well, depending on who you ask, the answers could be many and varied, but there is one very inescapable answer. The judging in Junior Showmanship is subjective and that means the judging is based on or (at least) influenced by personal feelings, tastes or opinions.

Judges hope to see young people with gentle hands and plenty of patience that are demonstrating the technical expertise necessary to be successful in the ring. The one thing I think juniors can count on is the first-place winner in each class is the young person that we would most want on the other end of the leash with our dog should we be in a situation where we were unable to be showing it.
