In the Spotlight: Professional Handler Anna Stromberg

Join us for an interview series where we get to know some of our most successful breeder-owner-handlers in purebred dogs.

Tell us about your introduction to the sport of purebred dogs. Share the steps that led you to your success as a handler today.

Growing up in Sweden, where there are no professional handlers. My parents bred Afghan hounds and until I was 13 I was not allowed into the ring.. .I needed to be ready… I was! I won the group and BIS- 4 the following week.

My mentor for handling then was Elisabet Levén and I am currently showing her dog here in America (he is number one Afghan hound) the circle is closed!

Has there been an individual who has been instrumental in your success? Who was the first dog that put you on the map?

Mom and dad of course, Elisabeth and then Michael Canalizo who I assisted for close to 13 years. I can’t thank Tryst enough for the adventures she took us on. She was an amazing pet, show dog and a spectacular Afghan Hound.

How do you ensure your dogs are mentally and physically prepared for shows especially when you are attending more shows than ever before? How do you handle nerves and pressure for both humans and dogs?

I work with exceptional breeders and owners that have mentally sound dogs and I ensure that nothing is lacking them. We have a 5 acre fully fenced farm and kennel and the dogs get stimulation all day long as well as individual training. We don’t use treadmills ever. We believe in fresh air and good walks and runs. If I can go home at the end of the day I  do, even from big events so the dogs can run on grass, get fresh air and be ready for the next day.

What are some of your favorites? Favorite weekend? Favorite showgrounds? Favorite restaurant?

Westminster and Orlando are the dot over the I for different reasons. A national is always extra special and I personally love our Brooksville shows! A restaurant that is not a chain is a winner in my eyes!

Tell us your favorite win or memory in the sport of dogs.

Standing on a folding chair to be able to see over the crowd on the bay at the Bahia resort in San Diego watching Bob Stein point to Michael and Tryst for the National over close to 500 afghans.. never again will that happen! And it was Michael’s birthday.
