362 – The Annual, 2022-23

By Amy Fernandez

From a breeder’s perspective, the pandemic simply amplified many issues that have been forcing changes in our entrenched standards and practices.

Among other revelations, breeders realized that inviting strangers into your home is not obligatory–those fabled home visits are not necessary or safe. If that’s your thing, go ahead. But from the standpoint of evaluating buyers, it has limited value. Previously, no one discussed the potential risks associated with this open-door policy, although the downside has generated plenty of “True Crime” documentaries. Instead, we find ourselves scrambling to undo regrettable decisions at significant mental and financial cost. Hopefully, this real-life horror story offers tips for recognizing and avoiding such disasters.

This particular breeder’s crisis revealed the limitations of our time-honored strategies and beliefs. Some names and details have been changed or omitted due to ongoing litigation. However, the events described are most definitely true. The main player in our story, the breeder, wants to share her story in order to raise awareness within our purebred community.
