The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed during the nineteenth century along the Chesapeake Bay to retrieve water birds in harsh weather and challenging water conditions. The features supporting his work are valued in the conformation ring as well, so there is not a big difference between field and show dogs.

We found ten Chesapeake Bay Retriever breeder-judges and fifteen breed mentors to invite to take a survey on the priorities of their breed. Six of the judges and ten mentors agreed to participate. In the end, we had surveys from the six judges and four mentors.

The group averaged over thirty-eight years in the breed. Those who are approved to judge have been doing so for nearly seventeen years on average. Most of the judges and some of the mentors have judged at their national specialty and at other Chessie specialties.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Virtues

The survey included a list of characteristics from the breed’s AKC standard. The experts were asked to rank the items from most important (1) to least important (16). The list below is in sequence based on the average placements on the surveys.

1. Double coat: short, harsh, wavy outer coat; dense, fine wooly undercoat, with natural oil
