Many of us will be walking through the ring gates of the Westminster Kennel club this month. When we do, it can feel as if our whole show career has been building to that moment. It can feel like the most important moment of your show career, especially if it is your first time on the famous green carpet. And, if you get these feelings, you may also have anxiety accompanying them. So, what can we do about it?

As we approach the dates of this prestigious show, I offer some words of advice for everyone–don’t overthink it. I know, it’s easier said than done, but it can really make a difference with the jitters. If you are showing at Westminster–or any show in the country for the matter–you deserve to be there. If you’re a junior, countless hours have gone into qualifying and just participating is a huge honor. You’ve paid for the entries, the hotels, the gas, and numerous other expenses, but, most importantly, you’ve devoted your time. If you are exhibiting, you’ve already earned your place with your training, grooming, and dedication to your dog. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be there. When that day comes and you’re stepping onto the carpet for the first or tenth time, take a deep breath and just enjoy the experience. Your hard work has gotten you there and it will carry you even further.
