Remembering William Stifel

We received the sad news that William Stifel passed away recently.

William F. Stifel was elected the fourteenth President of the American Kennel Club in March 1978. Mr. Stifel was born in June 1922 in Toledo, Ohio, and studied at Western Reserve Academy and Harvard University. During World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard.  He married Carolyn Graham in 1957, and they have two daughters.

Mr. Stifel joined the AKC staff in August 1957. He became Supervisor of the Show Plans and Show Records Departments and served in this capacity until 1964, when he was elected Executive Secretary.  In 1976, he became Executive Vice-President and in 1978 was elected President.  He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1977.

He was a member of the Westminster Kennel Club, the Westchester Kennel Club, and the Greater St. Louis Dog Training Club.  He served as Delegate from the San Francisco Dog Training Club(Dec 1969-December 1971), after which he represented the Greater St. Louis Training Club(June 1977- June 1990) and then the Westminster Kennel Club (Nov 2004-March 2009).
