In Memory of Steve Hurt
I was saddened to learn of the passing of a dear friend and icon within our fancy. Steve Hurt passed away yesterday, the day before his birthday. While unable to confirm his exact age, I believe he was in his early 80’s.
Steve was a retired handler, AKC Field Representative and AKC Judge. He attended his first dog show in 1955 and showed his first dog, a whippet, in 1956. Steve devoted over 5 decades to the sport of pure-bred dogs as an Owner/Handler, a Professional Handler, an AKC Field Representative and an AKC Judge. He was the first person to go Best In Show with a Norwich Terrier, which he did in 1976, 40 years after the breed was recognized by the AKC. Throughout his career he achieved Best In Show honors with 5 Norwich Terriers, all owned by Ed Jenner.
Steve’s dry wit always kept me on my toes. I looked forward to our witty exchanges and I have missed seeing him around. It was always a pleasure to see him at the Louisville shows, as even the last few years when his health was failing, he made it to Louisville at least one day.
Steve will be sorely missed by the fancy. Rest In Peace, my dear friend. May you stand tall once again!
Donations in Steve’s memory can be made to Take the Lead in his name.
