New York Increases Penalties for Pet Theft
Last week, New York Governor Cuomo signed a measure that will increase the penalty for those who steal companion animals.
The new law, which is supported by the AKC and takes effect immediately, increases the penalty from a $200 fine to a $1,000 fine for anyone who does any of the following:
1) Removes the collar or any means of identifying the owner from a domestic animal without the owner’s permission,
2) Entices a domestic animal out of an enclosure without the owner’s permission to remove identification, or
3) Transports a dog that is not lawfully in their possession with the purpose of killing or selling the dog (The new law also expands this provision to apply to all companion animals).
