MI House Approves Breeder and Shelter Regulations – Contact Senate Agriculture
The Michigan House of Representatives passed a bill just before their summer recess that will limit the number of dogs that can be kept on a single premises and define a “large scale commercial breeder kennel” based on how many intact female dogs someone owns, rather than actual sales.
Other provisions of this measure include new regulations and reporting requirements for animal control and animal protection shelters and new regulations regarding dogs being imported into the state. The AKC does not object to these provisions of the bill. The AKC is opposed to the portion of the bill that would define a commercial kennel based on dog ownership and arbitrarily limit the number of dogs someone can own.
The bill is now transferred to the Senate, which returns on July 16. The Senate Agriculture Committee so far has declined to consider the Senate version of this bill. Please take a moment to contact the Senate Agriculture Committee, thank them for not considering Senate Bill 5060 to date and express your concerns over the definition of “large-scale commercial dog breeding kennel” and limits on dog ownership in both House Bill 5095 and Senate Bill 560.
Read AKC’s previous alerts for more information on House Bill 5095 and Senate Bill 560.
