AKC Board Updates for Conformation Judges – Judges Approval Process
The following letter was sent to all AKC Conformation Judges regarding updates for the Judges Approval Process:
The AKC continues to examine options in the short and long term to assist judges impacted directly by the mass cancellation of AKC conformation dog shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From these ongoing efforts, the Judging Operations Department is writing to inform you of actions taken by the Board of Directors at its May 2020 meeting respective to conformation judges and the Board approved Judging Approval Process.
Below is a summary of the Board’s actions. Please note two actions are temporary measures and two are modification to the Judging Approval Process that will be ongoing. The Board did express that it intends to re-examine the temporary measures toward the end of the year to determine if they should be extended. All items are effective immediately.
- Increase the maximum number of permit breeds that one may be approved at one time by six (6) for all judges through 12/31/2020.
The result of this action is the total number of permit breeds a judge may have at one time has been increased to 18, 24, and 30 for judges approved for less than one group, less than four groups, and four or more group respectively. This action is specifically intended to compensate for a judge’s inability to complete assignments in permit breeds due to cancelled events. - Increase the maximum number of CEU that may be attained in specific categories by one (1) CEU effective through 12/31/2020.
This action will assist judges by expanding the number of CEU that may be attained in various categories through completed qualified educational experiences in categories which otherwise would have been capped. The maximum number of CEU that may be attained in the following categories has been increased (new max CEU): Attend Parent Club National Specialty (7); Attend Approved Seminar/Workshop (6); Mentors, Tutors and Kennel Visits (6); Sweepstakes or Futurity assignment (5); and Replacement/foreign assignment to Judge the Breed (4). - Permit Virtual Tutoring in all breeds.
In recognition of the enhancements of distance learning capabilities and the potential benefits, the allowance for Telephone Tutoring in Low Entry breeds has been replaced with the acceptance of a Virtual Tutoring experience in all breeds when conducted with a parent club approved mentor or established breed expert (1 CEU). In addition, for Low Entry Breeds ONLY an additional Virtual Tutoring with unique mentor may be accepted if the department determines that insufficient educational opportunities exist in the breed. This action is a revision to the Judging Approval Process and will be accepted as an ongoing Qualifying Component. - Breed Webinars
In recognition of the overwhelming success and positive response from the judging community to AKC’s Webinar Series, the Board approved the addition of attendance of a “Webinar on Breed utilizing Parent Club materials” as a Qualifying Component (1 CEU). This action is a revision to the Judging Approval Process and will be accepted as an ongoing Qualifying Component.
All documents and forms impacted by the two revisions to the Judging Approval Process will be updated and posted on the AKC website. The temporary measures WILL NOT be reflected in the revised documents and forms.
We feel confident the measures taken will assist judges impacted directly by the cancellation of events, without sacrificing the expectation for quality of judging and the emphasis of maintaining an education-based approval process. The difficulty to advance to regular status has been addressed by increasing the maximum number of permit breeds a judge may be approved across the board without minimizing the importance of the post-permit approval assignments. In addition, expanding distance learning opportunities via the formal additions of Virtual Tutoring for all breeds and the Breed Webinars to the Judging Approval Process for prospective judges coupled with the broadening of educational credit that may be attained in numerous categories will assist judges complete application requirements in breeds they had been preparing and/or provide the means to initiate study in new breeds.
As always, you are welcome to contact the Judging Operations Department with any questions you may have concerning this notification or on any matter related to judging or applications to judge.
Stay safe and well,
Tim Thomas
