Banner Day for Dachshunds

By Amy Fernandez

In a true demonstration of Teutonic toughness Dachshunds were out in full force for Sunday’s Knickerbocker specialty despite the frigid three degree morning cold.

Like many of this week’s specialties class competition was small with several absentees from the total entry of:

2 -5 in Longhairs

2-3 in Smooths

0-5 bitches in Wires

Specials competition was the main deal and all three judges had some of the strongest competition this breed has seen in years.

Breeder/judge Marci Forrester called the shots in Longhairs and it was a good day for Minis across the board.

Winners Dog and BOW Sleepytimes The Talisman ML

Reserve Aviance’s Barbaro SL

Winners Bitch Sleepytime’s Almost Wicked ML

Reserve Grandgables Lil Fancy Flirt ML

From her specials entry of 8-4 she selected GCH DC Walmar-Solo’s OMG SL JE for BOV who also took Variety under breeder/judge Jane Fowler at Friday’s DCA specialty. (For a nice family touch, his top ranked brother, GCH Walmar-Solo’s IOU SL, also picked up BOV under Donald Sturz the previous day at DALI).  BOS went to GCH Leoralees Little Bitoheaven JBS SL.

Noted Hound expert Gayle Bontecou rendered the verdict in Wires going with Infiniti’s Picture Perfect V Leoralee MW from BBE for Winners Bitch and Radach’s Hot Off The Press V Harewood from 12 to 18 as Reserve. From her class of 19 specials (11-8) she went with GCG Daybreak’s Country Chic W as BOV and GCH Twinkle’s Corbin At Carowynd as BOS.

Famed Sheltie breeder and Herding judge Tom Coen judged Smooths selecting Ch. MiniDogLand Lincoln for BOS and the top ranked bitch GCH Passport What Did You Say SS for BOV sending her on her way to a BOB victory under Breed judge Dr. Robert Indeglia.

Jana and her breeder/owner/handler Arvind Debragnca traveled from Florida and he admitted that they weren’t quite prepared for New York’s record breaking cold weather. It was obviously worth it. Jana has done some very nice winning in the last two years including 21 Groups and 3 Bests but Debragnca wasn’t ready for this one. “She travels well and has been a very consistent winner. But the quality of competition in that ring was incredible. I am in shock.” He may be in for a few more shocks this week as Jana heads over to Westminster to shake up the Dachshund ring.
