I had the pleasure of attending the American Spaniel Club – Cocker Spaniel Summer National at Purina Farms this past weekend.  It’s an incredible event. They began the show with a grooming competition, which I thought was a good idea!  The entry was modest at 300, so they had the time to allot for the grooming contest.  There were agility trials every day of the national, too.  The first trial was Cockers Only followed by a couple of trials where all breeds were allowed.  They did the same with obedience.  For clubs who have a smaller national, running multiple trials open to all breeds is a great way to make money and be able to afford a venue may otherwise be unaffordable.  It is something to think about for clubs looking for a way to improve their treasury.

I noticed that Cockers are another breed that is aging.  By this, I mean that those that have depth of quality in their breeding program are getting on in years, and they won’t be able to continue their breeding program(s) forever.  Contrast that with only two junior handling exhibitors makes me scratch my head and think, “Where is the future of the breed?”

In true Linda Pitts fashion, she showed dogs throughout the week despite an injured shoulder requiring surgery.  Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery, Linda.  We all know you won’t be down for long!

Back in April, the American Kennel Club issued a press release announcing the judges for the NOHS Finals at the AKC National Championship.  That press release also announced the revised schedule for this year’s NOHS finals. Instead of the finals being held on Friday, the NOHS finals will be held on Saturday and Sunday.  Breeds with classes being judged on Saturday will have their NOHS finals breed judging on Sunday, and vice versa.  This should alleviate a lot of stress for owner-handlers who have had to make difficult choices in the past when conflicts arose between Specialty judging and NOHS Finals judging.

I have heard there will also be concurrent specialties held on the weekend.  Put on your dancing shoes my friends!  We are going to be very busy!!

I have had discussions with a couple people over the past few weeks regarding the rules regarding show photographers exhibiting at shows where they are taking official show photographs.  The AKC Show Manual states:

“Regarding the question of whether or not club officials and members of their households should exhibit at their club’s show, the AKC has no desire to legislate in this regard, but does expect clubs to seriously consider their own policies on the subject.  The AKC recognizes that in some parts of the country there are few shows.   Consequently, an exhibiting restriction placed on club officials is a hardship.  However, a club should realize that exhibitors and spectators sometimes arrive at the wrong conclusion when a dog owned or handled by a club officer or show official, or by a member of such person’s household, wins at its show. Therefore, clubs should consider an exhibiting restriction for its officers, show chairs and members of the show committee, as well as for members of their households.  In addition to club and show officials, clubs should also give consideration to placing a voluntary restriction on the exhibiting activities of the show photographer, as the show photographer has constant contact with the judges at an event.  Complaints are received when the show photographer or a member of his or her household exhibits dogs at the show.  If a club decides to adopt a restriction, a notice stating which club officers or show officials and members of their households will be ineligible to enter or handle dogs at the show should appear in the premium list.”

Exhibitors have a choice about which shows they enter and attend.  If this is an issue that concerns you, I strongly suggest reviewing the language in the premium list.

What do you think about show photographers exhibiting at shows where they are the official photographer? Drop a comment on Facebook or send me an email at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.

I heard that long-time West Coast show photographer Rich Bergman died.  Condolences to Rich’s family and friends at this sad time.

I am sad to report the passing of Bert Halsey.  Bert and his late wife, Marlene, were handlers on the East Coast.  He was a fixture in the Rottweiler ring. Bert will be remembered by his may friends for his wonderful sense of humor.  He was always helpful and encouraging to others.  Bert will be missed by all who knew him.

Marcelo and Roger Chagas experienced an electrical fire at their home, and the home is a total loss. Fortunately, they were away with all of their dogs!  A GoFundMe account has been set up for those who would like to contribute.

Congratulations to Heather Buehner and Jason McIlwaine on their recent engagement.  Best wishes to both for a great life together!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include the twins–Doug and Don Sprosty, Matias Mato, Carlena Pulliam, Mark Stephen, Pam Desrosiers and Connie Smith.  Best wishes for a great year ahead!

I am enjoying a week at home then I’m off to Canfield!  I’ll be covering the show with Table Talk Live this year so come see me!

Be safe out there, my friends and stay cool.  I will see you soon down the road.

Until next time…
