Table Talk • July 2, 2025

While it may be difficult to believe, the Independence Day weekend is here! With the 4th of July celebrations comes fireworks and, for a lot of our canine friends, this can be stressful. A couple of suggestions for things to help your dogs cope with the explosions include thunder shirts, playing music to drown out the sound of the fireworks, or getting a prescription from your vet for a drug that will calm them down. Do not wait until the last minute to come up with a plan to keep your dogs calm! If you are at a show, please make sure that someone is with your dogs when they are in exercise pens to ensure they do not panic and escape as a result of the noise.

With age comes confusion, and unfortunately that happened to me when I wrote last week’s Table Talk! My sincere apologies to the Lake Shore Kennel Club, as I had their shows confused with the other cluster that holds their shows in April at the same venue in Crown Point, Indiana.  Unfortunately, the outdoor area is not available to the Lake Shore Kennel Club in June. Here is hoping that Mother Nature is more kind to the cluster, and temperatures are cooler for their 2026 shows.

The Black Mountain Kennel Club has held their two all-breed shows and specialties in October for many years. They have secured a new location and changed the dates for 2025! Black Mountain has been approved for three all-breed shows and will hold their shows December 12th, 13th , and 14th this year at the Primm Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

One of the most stressful things about traveling with dogs in the summer months is the potential of breaking down and not being able to keep the dogs safe and cool. This past weekend, Esteban Farias’ rig broke down on his trip home from the weekend’s shows. Fanciers rushed to his aide to ensure everyone was transported home safely. In fact, Tommy Moyer left his steak dinner to assist Esteban’s rescue. This is yet another example of our community watching out for each other!

Last week we wished Anita O’Berg a happy birthday! It turns out this was a very special birthday since Anita also retired! Congratulations on your retirement, Anita! Best wishes for the next chapter ahead.

Congratulations to Scott Wasserman on completing his phlebotomy certificate! After sitting for the exam, Scott will be embarking upon a new career! Best wishes for the next chapter in your work life, Scott! I am sure your grooming clients will miss you.

Keith Bailey and Tracy Szaras are jetting off for an adventure in Germany! Enjoy the trip ladies, and safe travels.

AKC Judge Bonnie Threlfall has a Public Service Announcement for exhibitors and I’d like to share it with you:

“PSA from a dog judge…When we ask you to slow down, please realize that we want to evaluate your dog looking its best. We don’t care about land speed records for your breed. You might have a very correct dog, but you are making it look like a spider on speed. We are trying to find good breeding stock and it is very annoying to have to keep telling the over the top “handler/secret agent/whatever” to slow down. Your dog is not “moving out”. He/she looks like a mess!!”

Exhibitors, please take note! This is great advice from a great breeder and former professional handler who stands center ring and evaluates dogs week-in and week-out! Thank you for your candid words of wisdom, Bonnie!

Happy anniversary to lovebirds Brian and Lori Livingston! May the future bring you many more years of happiness ahead.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include:  Maripi Wooldridge, Marietta Singleton, Bruce Schwartz, Lisa Porter, Victoria Cornish, George Marquis, Tracy Szaras, Ashlie Whitmore, Heidi Gervais, Rod Ott, Laura King, Christian Rutten, and Toshi Omura. Happy Birthday to all! Enjoy your special day!

Remember this my friends… Choose Joy! Do not wait for things to get easier, simpler, or better.  Life will always be complicated. Learn to be happy right now, otherwise, you will run out of time!

Stay safe, stay cool, and pace yourselves! I look forward to seeing you down the road. Until next time!
