Table Talk · June 25, 2025

If there was any doubt that summer has arrived, the temperatures this past weekend all over the country reminded us that it’s here!  The Lake Shore Kennel Club, held at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, Indiana, cancelled its Sunday show due to excessive heat.  Having exhibited at this venue for many years, I can attest to the misery in that building with no air-conditioning and very little air flow!  There is a beautiful outdoor area that is fully shaded, with cover for grooming, etc. on the property where the show is held, but it’s not available.

Lake Shore KC member Scott Wasserman contacted us and said, “Our show chair had to make a very difficult decision. Some received it well and some did not.

“The pavilions and outdoor area are not available that weekend because a local company rents it for the entire weekend for their employee appreciation party the same weekend every year. Many of the pavilions are owned by the fair themselves, not the fair grounds. The show has been that weekend with the same weather since 2014. If you’ve shown there, you’re well what the weather normally is.

“We had 14 fans spread through the building, supplied coolers of iced bottled water for our exhibitors and there is a building with air conditioning where people and dogs can cool off.”

Exhibitors in Cumberland, Maine had an unexpected afternoon off when the 2nd show was cancelled due to excessive wind.

I heard that the shows held last weekend in Doswell, Virginia had a lot of non-dog show entertainment.

First, an uninvited guest had to be escorted out of the building transported by a pooper scooper!  This slithering spectator made its presence known and was promptly removed from the building.  It is my understanding this is not the first snake that has been escorted out of the building during a dog show!

Congratulations to Ace Mattock and Samuel Black on their win at the FSS Open Show in Doswell.  To make their win even more special, during their win photograph, they got engaged!  What a memorable day for Ace and Samuel!  Congratulations on your engagement AND on your exciting win with Juke Box the Carolina Dog.

Congratulations to Hannah Ralston on the birth of your baby girl, Peyton, who weighed in at at 7.2 pounds and measured 21.5 inches long.  Hannah has had a rough time, being diagnosed with cancer after becoming pregnant.  Anyone who knows Hannah can attest to her positive attitude. She has maintained that positive attitude during this ordeal.  Now that Peyton is here, Hannah will undergo the remainder of her chemotherapy. Hannah, we are all thinking of you and look forward to having you back at the shows with baby Peyton in tow.

Our friend Elizabeth Salewsky has encountered some more health challenges and ended up hospitalized during the Ohio shows this past weekend.  As one can expect, many fanciers rallied to make sure that Elizabeth’s dogs were well taken care of when Elizabeth was taken to the hospital.  Sincere appreciation to Lea Anne Broseus, Gerry Thornton and Bobbi Kinley-Blewett for taking care of the dogs!  Elizabeth is in Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital, Room 3725 for those who would like to send a card.  Hopefully, she’ll will be released very soon.

I hear Hans Kabel was in Ireland judging Terriers this past week.  What a wonderful opportunity to judge dogs in such a beautiful country.

Maripi Wooldridge judged her first Terrier Group this past weekend in Oregon.  Congratulations on the first of what should be many wonderful judging opportunities for this a brilliant breeder and exhibitor–and now judge–of purebred dogs.

Alicia Morrison-Jones has been no stranger to the friendly skies.  She has travelled the world as a handler and a military spouse.  Now, Alicia is going embark upon a new journey!  You may see her when you check into an Alaska Airlines flight!  Best wishes for a great career ahead.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lois DeMers and her family as they mourn the loss of her beloved sister, Mikki.  Mikki passed away peacefully after an extended illness.  Please remember Lois and her family at this very sad time.

Happy Anniversary to Anna Stromberg and Ben Franzoso and Michael Allway and Lynn Meyer.   We all wish you many years of health, love and happiness ahead!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include:  Megan Terella, Jess Flach, Mary Norton, Sulie Greendale-Paveza, Cassidy Hayes, Anita O’Berg, David Haddock, Hannah Ralston, Cully Leck, Angela Booth, Greg McCarthy, Josh Desrosiers and Hannah Sohnle.  May this trip around the sun be the best one yet!

As you travel the beautiful countryside travelling from one show to another, please consider this:

Be Strong, but not rude

Be proud, but not arrogant

Be thoughtful, but not lazy

Be bold, but not a bully

Be kind, but not weak.

Be safe out there, my friends.  Stay hydrated and keep an eye on canines and humans.  Make sure those temperature monitors are working! Until next time…
