The excessive number of dog shows held every week of the year has been a topic of conversation among fanciers for some time. While there are still a few “underserved” areas, many exhibitors can choose among several shows within a few hundred miles of their home–in different directions–on any given weekend. I think we all agree this dilutes the entry–in numbers and quality–at most of these shows. To demonstrate the reality of this predicament, Wayne Cavanaugh did a bit of research for the Memorial Day weekend slate of shows and came up with the following statistics: Over the 5-day Memorial Day weekend, 84 dogs won a BIS, 588 dogs won a group, and 2,325 dogs placed in a group. I don’t know about you, but those numbers are staggering to me! I still remember when I was actively campaigning top dogs and once received 17 whopping points for a group 1 at a show in rural Ohio.
In the June issue of The Canine Chronicle, our editor and publisher, Tom Grabe, discussed this problem and offered solutions in his From the Publisher column. You can read it at https://caninechronicle.com/current-articles/from-the-publisher-64/. I hope these problems will be addressed by AKC management in the not-too-distant future.
I heard there was a seizure of 80 Doberman Pinschers in Ohio recently. Authorities seized these emaciated, abused dogs from Marty Eis. Since the seizure, Mr. Eis has relinquished all the animals and several humane societies, Doberman fanciers, and rescues have stepped in to assist in rehabilitating these dogs so they can be adopted and live the remainder of their lives with love and happiness. Mr. Eis has been ordered to pay the Henry County Humane Society more than $30,000 and has been charged with five counts of cruelty to companion animals, which are fifth-degree felonies. Those interested in donating to the cause or adopting one of the animals should go to www.hmdd.org or the Doberman Pinscher Club of America rescue organization. Sincere thanks go out to all the amazing people in the Doberman community who have assisted with this huge undertaking!
The 25th Anniversary of the movie Best In Show was celebrated recently at the Tribeca Film Festival. Several Purina Ambassadors attended the celebration and brought the breeds that were highlighted in the movie. Events like this are great for our sport and purebred dogs. Thank you to all who attended the event and proudly represented the sport of purebred dogs.
I am saddened to report that Jackie Stacy, a prominent figure in the world of purebred dogs for several decades passed away on June 10th following a valiant fight against glioblastoma. Her husband Terry was at her side. Jackie’s passion for dogs began at an early age, when she obtained her first Pomeranian at 10 years old. Jackie was named Female Handler of the Year in 1986. To read more and find links to several interviews with Jackie and Terry, you can follow this link https://caninechronicle.com/category/world-news/. Our sincere condolences to Terry, and the rest of Jackie’s family and friends at this very sad time.
The summer months are upon us, and those temperatures are rising! Please be sure to keep an eye on your canine friends and remember… do not give ice cubes to a hot dog! Using a spray bottle of water or bucket is much safer than feeding your canine friend ice cubes when they are hot. Make sure your temp alerts are working and check on your rig regularly! Have a great summer and enjoy time with your canine friends!
Happy anniversary to West Coast Chief Steward Kevin Ellingson and his beautiful bride, Julie. Jann Butler and Will Bratcher are also celebrating many years of wedded bliss. Best wishes for many more happy, healthy years ahead!
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Jim Frederiksen, Susan Bradshaw MacLymon, Erin Kerfoot, Patty Haines, Ray Stevens, Angie Long, Rachel Corbin, and Perry Payson. Have a great trip around the sun, my friends!
Remember this, my friends. We do not have to agree on anything to be kind to one another.
Be safe out there! Be sure to pitch in and help wherever possible, and please don’t forget to mentor those that are just beginning their dog show experience. I look forward to seeing you down the road. Until next time…
