As one year ends and a New Year begins, we are all reminded of the vision or image of “Father Time”. It can symbolize “the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole.” In our sport, timing truly is everything. I will try to share some examples of how important “good timing” can be in the sport of purebred dogs.
For me personally, I look back in time and realize how many important decisions were made–decisions that could have completely changed my life had I hesitated or jumped the gun. During my college years, I worked at a large veterinary hospital and attended dog shows on weekends. When my mentor, Sunny Shay, passed in 1978, I was asked to manage Grandeur Kennels to continue what she and Roger Rechler started: maintaining and fortifying the Afghan Hound line that began in 1941. The head of the veterinary practice said he would hold my position for six months in case things didn’t work out. (It’s now 2025, and I’m still involved with Grandeur.) During those years, I listened to the sport’s greatest minds and learned the importance of “good timing.” Here are my thoughts on that subject.
In the mid-to-late ‘90s, AKC Rep Frank Harra spoke to me about becoming a Rep, but he advised me not to rush into it. “Wait until it’s your second job,” he said. I heeded his advice and became an AKC Rep in 2005.
