Remembering Capt. Jean L. Heath, Black Watch Lakeland Terriers
The Canine Chronicle is saddened to report the passing of Capt. Jean L. Heath, a distinguished U.S. Navy veteran and renowned breeder of purebred dogs. Jean passed away on December 24, 2024, at 92. Her illustrious career spanned decades, beginning with her service as a physical therapist in the Navy. During her time in service, she earned numerous honors and accomplishments, making her an influential and admired figure within the military community.
After she retired from the Navy, Jean began breeding and showing purebred dogs in the early 1970s. Jean began breeding Miniature Schnauzers and later Lakeland Terriers under her kennel name, “Black Watch.” Alongside Bill Cosby, they co-bred more than 125 Lakeland Terriers, including “Awesome Blossom,” who made history as the top winning Lakeland Terrier in breed history, handled by Clay Coady. Blossom was the winner of 100 Best In Shows, as well as the #1 Terrier in 1996 and 1997. Jean and Bill also campaigned “CH Black Watch Sophie Tucker” with Clay Coady handling. Sophie became the winner of the American Kennel Club National Invitational Dog Championship in 1992.
Jean will be remembered for her dedication, passion, and remarkable contributions to purebred dogs. The Canine Chronicle extends our deepest condolences to her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by many.
