84 – The Annual, 2024-25

John Mandeville and I were AKC Vice Presidents at the same time in the 1990s. John was an extremely bright and bold thinker who saw the sport through a wide apolitical lens. When John left, he wrote a column called Inside Out, a clever nod to the perspective of seeing the sport from both sides.

We served in the hierarchical government as required by AKC’s not-for-profit charter. In such organizations, the right decisions can be difficult if keeping your job is a primary goal. In a typical business, employees don’t have to be elected to keep their jobs. The AKC government, however, requires that every officer (the president, the VPs, Secretary and Treasurer) is elected by the AKC Board every year.

I mention this only to say that I am fully aware that supporting items on this list may result in a loss of votes for those who choose to maintain annual employment. With all that said, here are five wishes for 2025.
