294 – The Annual, 2023-24

Several months ago, Marc and I took our new pups–Ralph (a miniature smooth Dachshund) and Zsozsi (his big Standard Smooth ‘sis’)–down to our local beach in Bournemouth.

It was late in the evening, and the perfect time for two energetic scamps to go wild on the expansive sand–something they both love to do.

As expected, on a chilly late spring evening, the vast beach was completely deserted. We slipped their leads and soon the babies were doing large figure of eights around us as we ambled along…

Suddenly, up ahead I saw a large shape, slinking around in the shadows. It then stopped, turned to face us and froze.

I immediately called the babies back, and quite unusually for Dachshunds, they obeyed the command immediately.

The dark, amorphous shape then began to move–fast. Hurtling towards us all.

Instinctively, I swept my Standard girl up in my arms and Marc did the same with little Ralph.

The shape got closer.

Now I knew exactly what I was dealing with… a huge XL American Bully.
