It is hard to believe that Labor Day has come and gone! This is a sad time for me as I truly love summer and Labor Day is the “official” close of my favorite season. As we tumble into fall, it also means that our show year is only a few months from ending. And that, my friends, is hard to believe! Best wishes to all my friends that are in a race to the finish. Please do not forget to enjoy the ride! When it is all said and done, memories are what cannot be taken from us regardless of the result.
Fanciers who are making travel arrangements for the AKC National Championship in Orlando may be surprised that the Hyatt has no rooms available for the entire show week. The room block at the Hyatt does not begin until Thursday, and the hotel is completely sold out until that time. As it turns out, there is a Hyatt convention in Orlando and the property that usually houses many exhibitors and judges beginning on Sunday/Monday is the venue for the Hyatt Convention!!! The Hilton property does have rooms available and, as I understand, the walk to the Orange County Convention Center from the Hilton is actually shorter than the walk from the Hyatt. Every year it feels like the walk from the Hyatt gets longer (and I use the exact same route year-in and year-out). So, I am looking forward to trying the Hilton. I hope that I am pleasantly surprised with a shorter walk to the Convention Center. Rooms are selling out fast. My advice is to make your room reservations sooner rather than later!
I recently shared a post from an owner/handler who wrote about professional handlers and the hard work and dedication required for them to do their job well. That post went viral on my personal Facebook page. I shared the post because of its positive, motivating message. Apparently, many other fanciers were as moved as I was after they read it. I would like to give a shout-out to Renee Kwiatkowski for writing this piece. Renee ended her post by thanking professional handlers for making her strive to do better! Whether we lose to a professional handler or an owner/handler, we should all look at the winning entry and ask if there was something you could have done differently to change the end result. Could you have trimmed our dog differently, moved your dog at a different speed or stacked your dog better? Perhaps the answer is no. Maybe you did everything possible to make your dog look its best, and perhaps the dog that won was a better example of the breed. Instead of assuming another dog won because of something other than the fact the dog was better, presented better, or in better condition, perhaps we should all take our losses as a learning experience and strive to do better!
Bon Voyage to Danelle Brown who is leaving on what looks like a most excellent Alaskan adventure! Have the best time, my friend. I cannot wait to see some fabulous photos!
Armando Angelbello recently returned from what looked like an amazing family trip to Costa Rica where he celebrated his wedding anniversary and the birthday of his grandson!
Unfortunately, the “hot mess express”(I say this because we are friends) has been sidelined with an injury! Holley Eldred cannot be left alone for one minute! She fell out of her Sprinter while loading it for shows and broke her wrist. Take it easy, my friend! We will see you back in the ring as soon as you are able!
Pam Bruce will be taking some required time off due to a ruptured achilles tendon. Sadly, she will be missing her National Specialty. I hope we see Pam back in action in time for the AKC National Championship in December.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include: Susan Shephard, Brianne Major, Darla Daugherty, Bonnie Datema, Loen Irons, Lisa Thomas and Lorraine Rainwater. Have the best day and may your next trip around the sun be fantastic!
Let us all be thankful for our wonderful dogs and our great sport! It is amazing the number of great people in our lives that we would not have met had it not been for our dogs!
Be safe out there, my friends! Enjoy the moment and always strive to do better. I’ll see you soon down the road. Until next time…
