Rat Terrier Gains Full AKC Recognition

The Rat Terrier gained full AKC recognition this month and will now be joining the AKC Terrier Group.

The Rat Terrier is one of just a few handfuls of American breeds. They were originally bred to hunt vermin above and below ground. It is believed to trace back to ancestors of Fox Terriers and an array of other breeds, including Whippets and Italian Greyhounds.

The AKC Standard describes a medium to small, compact and parti-colored animal, that appears quick, powerful, and elegant. It is also important to note that the Rat Terrier comes in two sizes, the miniature, measuring ten to thirteen inches at the withers, and the standard, measuring thirteen to eighteen inches. The standard also calls for a dog full of energy, yet easily trainable.

For more information on the Rat Terrier visit akc.org or check out the Rat Terrier in the Terrier Group at your local show!
