Europe’s most important show, the Europe Dog Show was held in Wels, Austria on 14, 15?& 16th of June. High expectations preceded it, because this year WDS was in China (with not so high entries), so everybody waited a big bang from the EDS.
The home city of the site for EDS was Wels, in Upper-Austria, a small town with about 60,000 inhabitants, close to Linz, the 3rd largest Austrian city. Wels is really in the heart of Europe, Berlin is 700km, Paris is 1000km, Milan 700km, and Budapest 450km. The city is a typical Austrian small town, nice, atmospheric, with 2000 years of history.
Actually there were two shows that were run together; in the two great halls was the Europe Dog Show, and in the smaller, other halls was the Austria Winner (AW) show, but the show was a little bit strange. There was Group Winner judging of the AW (in the main ring of the EDS), and 3 days of the Day winner, as Best of Day, but there was not a BIS for this show.
The EDS’s entry numbers were not bad, but we have seen bigger Europe Dog Shows. The reasons for the smaller entry could be: the ban of the ear cropped and tail docked dogs, and the strict veterinarian rules (earlier this year there was a big scandal at an Austrian show, Graz, where the vets banned the entry to the show for a lot of dogs–short nose breeds, loose skin breeds, the vets controlled the chain collars on the dogs, exhibitors were not able to use any sprays, chalks, etc.
The entries came not just from Europe, but from around the world. There were dogs from South and North America, Asia and Australia, too. Interesting, but the most dogs came from Italy: 2047, the second from Russia: 2030, Austria was fifth with only 855 dogs. The total entry was 13,244. As usual, it was a big exhibitor-breeder-handler-press-judge meeting.
There was a very nice main ring–big enough, light, with a nice podium for the winners (5 dogs placed in the Groups). The great entry numbers meant outstanding lineups, and the rings were big enough (and for the giant breeds two rings were opened to one, for example, Irish Wolfhounds, Great Danes). The catalog was printed and online too. We had enough café, buffets, restaurants, and restrooms as well, so everyone was comfortable.
