Table Talk – June 13, 2018

If you have never been to Woofstock, you need to go at least once, either as an exhibitor or a spectator! For those who have not had the experience, put it on your bucket list! The Purina Booth had a great location directly across from the group ring, and in line with one of the loudspeakers. I think Bob Birdwell, the Woofstock music curator, really nailed it with the idea of playing ‘60s music all day during the shows. The music has an endearing, calming effect and really sets the mood for the weekend! Seeing everyone dressed up was a real hoot and I got special joy out of seeing so many dogs in costume. I am hoping that at some point in the not too distant future my feet recover from the yellow go-go boots that were a part of my ensemble… not one day, but two! If you did not have an opportunity to see the photos, please visit our website at caninechronicle.com and take a look!

The PETA folks worked hard to ruin the show for everyone on Saturday, but they didn’t succeed. They snuck around the show and let a few dogs out of their crates. In typical dog show family fashion, everyone banded together and watched each other’s dogs which shut down their efforts in short order!

A prominent topic of conversation at the show was the theft of Tony Carter’s van full of dogs. The van was stolen while Tony and his two travel mates went into an In N Out Burger to get lunch while enroute to Woofstock. They left it running to provide a/c for their dogs. Someone hopped in the van and drove away. Needless to day, everyone at the show was concerned about the safety of the dogs. When the announcement came over the loudspeaker that the dogs were found SAFE and SOUND, the cheers and sighs of relief from all of the exhibitors was amazing.

As one might expect, many fanciers are quite emotional about how this theft occurred and the resulting danger the dogs encountered. We should all view this as a cautionary tale, and be thankful that none of the dogs were harmed. However, airing our opinions about the situation on social media not only creates negative energy among the fancy, but also invites negative comments from the animal rights people and the general public. If you feel inclined to voice your opinion, I urge you to take that communication off-line and express it to those directly involved.

Clint and Karen Livingston experienced a bit of bad luck this past weekend when their backpacks were stolen out of the rental car while they were at dinner with clients and friends. Unfortunately, both Clint and Karen had valuable belongings stolen. A side note to all my friends that attend shows at the Solano Fairgrounds in Vallejo: DO NOT LEAVE anything valuable in your car in that area!

AKC announced Lynn Meyer, daughter of AKC Judges Brian and Cindy Meyer, will be assuming the AKC Executive Field Representative post vacated by Mike Szabo who is relocating to the Florida area to assume the post vacated by Syd Good’s retirement.  Best wishes to Mike on his relocation and to Lynn in her new role.

David Williams is recovering from surgery to remove an abdominal growth. We are all pulling for you my friend and await the news regarding the next steps to your full recovery. You have a many friends within the fancy who are here for you.

I was saddened to hear that the fancy has lost two more great friends and better dog men: German Shorthaired Pointer enthusiast and AKC judge Frank Washabaugh passed away last week. Welsh Terrier and Airedale Terrier fancier Frank Stevens passed away on Sunday. Our condolences to the friends and family of these two long-time, respected members of our fancy. We will miss you.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: John Miller, Patti Neale, DeeDee Wells, Tim Ball and Susan Bradshaw.

Wherever your travels take you this week my friends, please be careful. Be kind to all and go out of your way to show an act of kindness. Until next time…
