Remembering Jean Smith – Palacegarden Pekingese

It is with the deepest regret that I report the sudden death of Jean Smith of the world famous Palacegarden Pekingese writes Geoffrey Davies. When one receives such devastating news it hits you with such force that it is difficult to compose one’s thoughts, but then reality kicks in, and makes you realise that death is part of the cycle of life, and all the positive aspects of Jean’s life predominate.I first met the Smiths in 2000 when they exhibited under me with a most promising puppy, Palacegarden Amaretto, which went on to win the kennel’s first challenge certificate under the respected breed authority, Jimmy Simpson in the same year.

Further success was to quickly follow when Jean and Jim produced three male champions in one litter: Champion Donovan, Champion Sullivan and Champion Finnegan at Delwin. Ch. Baroque, the son of Ch. Palacegarden Donovan was to follow. The beautiful bitch, Ch. Jezabelle was to win a coveted CC at Crufts in 2007, and Ch. Osric was to become a most worthy champion. However, the crowning glory of this kennel was to be the most beautiful and outstanding Ch. Malachy, who was sold to David Fitzpatrick, and had the accolade of winning Best In Show at Westminster 2012.

I always remember how very proud Jean and Jim were of this dog and the accolades he achieved.I recall Jean ringing me so excitedly to tell me of Ch. Malachy’s victory – she was justifiably proud of this magnificent Pekingese, not just because of the fact that she and Jim had bred the dog, but also that David through his mastery of presentation, which was almost an art form, had taken this dog to the very pinnacle of success.Jean always derived great pleasure from the success of others, and many of today’s U.K. Kennels, and indeed overseas kennels, owe so much to the Smiths. What they have achieved in 16 years is simply staggering; in this short period of time this modest couple contributed significantly towards producing some of the finest examples of the breed. I can say without hesitation that the Palacegarden Kennel compares favourably with such great kennels as Cherangani, Changte, Kanghe etc, that have gone before them.

Jean was such a talented and accomplished individual. First and foremost she was the very special wife and soulmate of Jim, and mother of their much loved children. She was also a lady of great intellect and determination, and that determination and commitment was expressed in her  talent as an artist.  Over a period of 60 years Jean and Jim developed what was a ruin into their most palatial family home, Pagecroft, and I don’t think there could be a finer monument to their achievements in life. The house is an expression of their love, through sheer hard work, talent and determination. Pagecroft is situated high on a hill, and enjoys the most stunning views over Hexham. Through their joint love of art and antiques, Jean and Jim filled this palace with the most tasteful art objects. I always remember Jean and Jim telling me of their ambition to create a Japanese garden at Pagecroft, and with their usual planning and tenacity they created this masterpiece. I have never known a couple work harder than these two dedicated individuals. Their day started very early in the morning, and I know that it often did not conclude until the late evening. They both lived and worked for their dogs and their beautiful home. Of course, their children were always their priority, and they took great pride in what their children and grandchildren had achieved.

Jean awarded just one set of tickets in the breed, and what a magnificent judge she was. She discharged her responsibility with integrity and honesty, without fear or favour.

At this sad time our thoughts are with Jim, and the children and grandchildren, who will be comforted by their wonderful memories of an incredible lady.
