The National Dog Show – Celebrates 15 years with 3 New Breeds and Youthful Fan Favorite
Hosted by John O’Hurley and David Frei with Mary Carillo, Johnny Weir, and Tara Lipinksi
The National Dog Show Presented by Purina, an annual event that’s as synonymous with Thanksgiving Day as pigskin and pumpkin pie, marks its 15th anniversary this year with three new breeds and an adorable fan favorite. More than 2,000 purebred breeds will compete for the coveted Best in Show title.
Since 2003, 43 new, AKC-sanctioned breeds have been introduced to the public by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia at the National Dog Show Presented by Purina. This year’s new breeds are: the American Hairless Terrier, a fun loving, high spirited descendent of the Rat Terrier; the Sloughi, a medium-large, short-hair, popular in North Africa for its hunting skills, endurance, and speed; and the Pumi, a medium-sized, Hungarian herding dog with a unique, wavy coat of corkscrew curls.
Appearing at this year’s event will be one-year old Hellion’s Ronin Samurai, a mini Bull Terrier, who’s been winning shows (and modeling in dog catalogues) since he was 4 months old. With more than 14 ribbons under his collar, this 31-pound ball of energy is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
The National Dog Show Presented by Purina is a treasured Thanksgiving Day tradition in homes across America, captivating viewers for two hours (noon – 2 pm in all times zones) between the Macy’s Parade and football as they lounge on the couch with the family pup. The annual celebration of man’s best friend is hosted by TV personality John O’Hurley, best known as “J Petermen” on Seinfeld. O’Hurley is joined by expert analyst David Frei, former host of Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on USA Network and America’s foremost authority on the sport. Together, they deliver a combination of folksy humor, expertise, and audience familiarity.
Joining O’Hurley and Frei, NBC sportscaster Mary Carillo will report from the busy backstage benching area as the dogs prepare to compete. And Olympians Johnny Weir and Tara Lapinski are back with their witty insight and commentary.
Whether they’re rooting on a particular pooch or gathering grooming ideas for Fido, on Thanksgiving Day 2016, over 20 million viewers will tune in to The National Dog Show Presented by Purina. The show has become so popular that Nielson ratings have increased or held firm for five of the last six years. No other mainstream television show can make that claim.
