The American Kennel Club Announces Winner of Inaugural Public Education Award

New York, NY-The American Kennel Club (AKC®), the world’s largest dog registry, industry authority and leading advocate for dogs, is pleased to announce The Greater Lafayette Kennel Club, Inc. as the recipient of the inaugural Public Education Award presented by the AKC Public Education Department.

The award was presented to the club on June 16, 2018 by AKC Executive Vice President Mark Dunn. The American Kennel Club is pleased to recognize the many ways in which The Greater Lafayette Kennel Club, Inc., located in Lafayette, Indiana, works to engage and educate their community. Some of those efforts include supporting a local 4-H Dog Project, participation in local festivals, the offering of CGC tests and obedience demonstrations, and hosting the AKC Patch Program.

The Public Education Award, which launched in November 2017, is designed to acknowledge the efforts of those working to engage, facilitate, and convey the ongoing importance of the relationships between people and canines through education and outreach. The recipient receives a $500 award and a plaque.

All AKC Clubs that have an active Public Education Coordinator are eligible to apply for this award. To qualify for the Public Education Award, clubs must submit an essay of 500 words or less that describes how their club has positively contributed to the education of the public about the ongoing importance of relationships between people and canines. Clubs can learn more about the Public Education Award at www.akc.org/public-education/public-education-award.  This award is presented semi-annually.

“Education is paramount to the AKC’s mission,” said Leslie Fetzer, Director of Education.

“Through education we preserve history, stay relevant to the needs of today’s dog owners and fanciers, and invest in the future health and well-being of dogs, dog sports, and the human-canine relationship.”
