May 1st is National Purebred Dog Day!

According to National Purebred Dog Day.Com, May 1st celebrates the heritage, diversity and predictability of the purebred dog. Each breed is a living legacy of the culture that created it for a reason, each breed indelibly etched in that culture’s history just as surely as its music, art, and language. This day celebrates that purebred dogs not only provide companionship, but work as guide dogs, service dogs, conservation dogs, livestock guardians, search and rescue dogs, earth dogs, police dogs and beyond.

This day was created by Suzi Szeremy, a Puli fancier in 2013. She hoped to bring notice to responsible dog ownership, along with bringing a new voice for purebred dog owners.

Notably, in March of 2015, Colorado was the first state in the country to recognize May 1st as National Purebred Dog Day. Since then, Connecticut and Georgia have joined Colorado in recognizing the day. In 2017, there was a congressional resolution in support of designating National Purebred Dog Day.
