Wake Up and Smell the Lack of Attention

0G5E1305

Noise, movement, and stimulation are everywhere! However, those who focus are usually far ahead of the “game” in being prepared and responding correctly and promptly to any requests. Those who are lost in their own revelries usually are penalized in some form for their lack of attention, especially at a dog show. In my opinion, there is not enough attention being paid to what is happening in the ring, outside the ring, and just about anywhere on a show grounds.

Sportsmanship and Fun

img027

The AKC reminds us that the principles of sportsmanship are the prime reasons why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. I would hate to think that these years may be coming to an end.

Reflections on Judging

How do our viewpoints impact the way we go about the business of evaluating respective merit? How do our priorities differ or vary? What impact does experience have? How well, or otherwise, do we translate educational experiences into acceptably valid practice? These are some of the things which seemingly always fascinate the mind.

Blame It On The Delegates

Bernardi Header

“The American Kennel Club is a “club of clubs”, and not a club of individuals. There are over 500 clubs that meet AKC membership requirements and have duly elected or appointed Delegates to represent them at quarterly meetings of the Delegate Body. Each delegate functions as a representative of his or her member club in voting on matters coming before the Delegate Body and electing from amongst their membership the thirteen individuals who serve on AKC’s Board of Directors. Under the Constitution and Bylaws of The American Kennel Club, the Delegate Body “… shall have sole power to make the Rules governing dog shows and field trials and the clubs or associations formed to conduct them.”

Judging In Bogota’… Excelente’

Bogotá

It was a first-time experience judging at a FCI show and traveling to South America. I was anxious about judging at an Asociación Club Canino Colombiano/FCI-sponsored show and judging a Sporting Group Specialty where I would be asked to critique each dog.

Center Stage with Ken Sinclair – Araki Tibetan Terriers

K9 Chronicle willy

In 1954 a true Scotsman was born and little did his friends and family know then, but he was a star in the making and a true breeder, enthusiast and judge of our time today in which we are grateful. Born in East Kilbride Scotland in 1954 was Ken Sinclair, later known for the world famous Araki Tibetan Terriers. He became fond of the Tibetan Terrier after leaving school and becoming a full-time kennel boy for a kennel in Sussex for Anne Matthews (Hardacre), then aged 18 years old. Growing up as a child and with his family they did own a few dogs as pets including a black miniature Poodle called Pepe. It was the day he went along with his family to collect Pepe that he was mesmerized by the beautiful set up of kennels and grooming area of this place that Ken stood there and knew that this is what he wanted to have for himself. Before Ken owned Tibetan Terriers, he enjoyed great success at Championship shows with Afghan Hounds back in the day when the entry in the UK was in the 300 to 400’s, and it was from the experience, knowledge and understanding of having this breed that he had an idea of what to look for in a Tibetan Terrier.

Differences In The Response

lostdog

In the real world, when bad things happen, most of us are caught off guard. Some learn from these experiences and become more cautious. It is a little like avoiding a crash on an icy road or driving too fast on a sharp curve or not checking to be sure the kennel gate was shut before leaving. These experiences can be game changers. In many respects life generally is a good teacher if we benefit from our experiences and learn from our mistakes.
