American Kennel Club Announces Georgia Representative David Knight AKC Legislator of The Year

Atlanta, GA – The American Kennel Club (AKC®) announced today that it is honoring Georgia Representative David Knight with the AKC Legislator of the Year award in recognition of his strong advocacy for responsible dog ownership. Representative Knight previously received the award in 2015.

Sheila Goffe, AKC Vice President, Government Relations, commented, “It is an honor to once again recognize Representative David Knight as AKC Legislator of the Year. We appreciate his consistent support for responsible dog ownership policies and his dedication to protecting the health and wellbeing of dogs in Georgia.”

“Representative Knight recognizes the benefits of dog ownership and the particular value of purpose-bred working, sporting and service dogs. His thoughtful, insightful approach to canine legislation demonstrates that he is both a knowledgeable statesman as well as a friend to Georgia dog owners.”

A formal presentation of the award is scheduled for late May in Griffin, Georgia.

About the Award

The James S. Holt Memorial Award for Promotion of Responsible Dog Ownership in Legislation, better known as the Legislator of the Year award, was established to honor legislators who demonstrate a commitment to promoting responsible dog ownership, the well-being of dogs, and protecting the rights of dog owners, exhibitors, and responsible breeders. The award is a memorial to the late Dr. James S. Holt, who served for 17 years as the AKC’s federal legislative consultant, participated in the sport of purebred dogs for more than 40 years, and served as an AKC Delegate and Board member.

About Representative David Knight

Representative Knight was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2004 and represents House District 130, which includes parts of Spalding, Henry and Lamar counties. He serves as Chairman of the Games, Fish and Parks Committee and is a member of the Appropriations, Banks and Banking, Small Business Development, Ways and Means, Higher Education, and Rules Committees. Knight has been a leader in advocating for policies that promote responsible dog ownership, support the rights of responsible dog owners, oppose arbitrary limit laws and breed-specific bans, and protect the wellbeing of all dogs.  He has demonstrated a strong dedication to the care and welfare of animals and promoting responsible dog ownership throughout his tenure. Representative Knight is an enthusiastic sportsman and purpose-bred dog owner. David has Case, an AKC field champion Vizsla and an English Cocker named Abby.
