Scottish Terrier Club of America National Rotating Specialty Weekend
by Marcia Dawson DVM (HiJinks Scottish Terriers)
For the weekend of April 6-7th, THE place to be was Atlanta, Georgia- host city for one of one of the biggest competitive events of the year. Throngs of excited fans filled the streets. There was excitement in the air, an electric anticipation of the contests to come!
But who’s talking about basketball? For a multitude of Scottie breeders, exhibitors, fanciers and spectators, this past weekend was not about a game of NCAA round ball but rather the National Rotating Specialty of the Scottish Terrier Club of America. Graciously hosted by the Scottish Terrier Club of Greater Atlanta, the 2-day event took place at the Jim Miller Park in Marietta, a spacious venue with room to spare for the many events on the schedule. The STCA held its specialty on Saturday, and the Atlanta club took over the ring on Sunday for its annual specialty. A strong entry of over 100 Scotties from all around the country thrilled the crowd, filling the ring with plenty of Scottie spirit and showing off all the beautiful colors of the breed. The judging panel was made up of respected breeder/judges: Saturday’s regular class judge was Fred Ferris from Connecticut, and on Sunday the Scotties were presented to Carol Annan from Scotland. Sweeps judge on Saturday was Rod Ott from California, and Sunday’s Sweeps judge was Masa Fergus Siroka from Slovenia. Obedience and Rally events were offered both days as well, demonstrating the versatility of the Scottie breed, and on Sunday 16 Scottie Rescues enjoyed their time in the spotlight with a parade. There were vendors with unique Scottie gifts, a silent auction of Scottie collectibles, and a boutique table of anything Scottie for all tastes. Delicious meals were provided by a local caterer, and the banquet Saturday evening was followed by a breed structure seminar, delivered by Scottie breeder/judge Kathi Brown.
Under the blue skies and glorious sun of a Georgia spring weekend, Scottie folks from all over the country and the world came together to see old friends and to make new ones, to proudly display their dogs, and to celebrate the incomparable Scottish Terrier.
