Colleges Implement Pet Programs to Relax Students During Exam Week
The Huffington Post highlighted several universities that have “gone to the dogs” during final exam week. Emory University, Kent State University and Macalester College are just a few of the many colleges that have brought dogs on campus to help ease and relax students during exam week. Some universities have dogs in counseling centers open to students to visit during the week, while faculty brings the pets in at other universities. Further, Harvard Medical School and Yale Law School have therapy dogs in their student libraries that can be checked out and returned, just like a book.
The Huffington post notes research that shows that interaction with dogs decreases stress hormones, while increasing happiness hormones. A professor at Kent State University hopes to conduct research on how pet programs on college campuses help students cope with stress.
