Australian Dog’s Life Saved by Drinking Vodka
Jacinta Rosewarne brought her Maltese, Charlie, into the Animal Accident and Emergency in Melbourne, Australia with a case of Ethylene Glycol poisoning. Ethylene Glycol is a sweet tasting liquid that is often found in radiator and brake fluids. When ethylene glycol is ingested it causes kidney failure.
In Australia, alcohol is the only medicine given to counteract particular poisons. Staff at the Animal Accident and Emergency state that alcohol alters the chemical reaction and stops the kidney failure from occurring.
Charlie’s treatment took place over two days. He was given successive doses of vodka over the two days. Charlie’s owner reported that he stumbled around and acted like a typical drunk during the treatment. However, Charlie is now sober and perfectly healthy after his successful treatment.
