Westminster to Host AKC Meet The Breeds on Westminster Weekend in 2015

The Westminster Kennel Club is once again expanding the activities of its famous Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, announcing today with the American Kennel Club that it will present the AKC’s Meet the Breeds event on the Saturday of Westminster weekend.

Westminster, which added the inaugural Masters Agility Championship on the Saturday before its all breed dog show earlier this year, will host Meet the Breeds, the AKC’s popular hands-on event, at New York City’s Pier 92 on Saturday, February 14, simultaneous and in adjoining space with Westminster’s Agility Championship, which is held at Pier 94.

Following that, the club’s 139th Annual All Breed Dog Show will take place at both Pier 92 and 94 on Monday and Tuesday, February 16-17, with evening finals once again to be staged at Madison Square Garden each of those nights.

“We are pleased to add another educational element to our activities for the dog-loving public,” said Westminster President Seàn W. McCarthy. “This gives the public the chance, in the same location, on the same day, to learn about a number of breeds as well as the chance to view the talented, athletic dogs – including mixed breeds – competing in the Masters Agility Championship. This is a wonderful lead-in to our dog show on Monday and Tuesday, with all the greatest show dogs competing as they have since our very first show in 1877.”

In its sixth year, AKC Meet the Breeds will offer attendees the unique chance to meet and play with hundreds of different dog breeds, all while learning about responsible pet ownership and what breed is right for their lifestyle.

“The American Kennel Club is excited that we’ll be able to continue to grow our dog-loving audience by combining these two great events from New York’s most recognized canine organizations,” said Dennis Sprung, President and CEO of the American Kennel Club. “In addition to enjoying the 2nd Masters Agility Championship, visitors will be able to enjoy decorated booths, play with dogs and puppies of more than 100 AKC breeds and chat about responsible dog ownership and finding the right breed for their lifestyle with our dedicated club volunteers.”

Westminster moved the daytime judging of its long-running dog show to the Piers in 2013, and added its Masters Agility Championship at Pier 94 in 2014.
