Remembering Charles Self
Charles Self passed away last Tuesday evening June 21st peacefully and quietly here at our home in Maryland after a brief, but fierce 10 week battle against Pancreatic cancer. He was 69 years old. He was presently an AKC approved judge of Sporting and Hound breeds for over 14 years.
Charles handled dogs professionally before that for about 30 years from the late ’60s to the mid-’90s, having shown mostly Sporting breeds and specializing in American Cocker Spaniels. He exhibited many top winning Group and Best in Show winners and Specialty winners.
Charles was born in Birmingham, Alabama and lived in and around there for much of his life, spending the last 15 years here in Poolesville, Maryland. He served 6 years in the Coast Guard Reserves and taught school for 10 years in Jefferson County, Alabama where he also drove a school bus for 15 years. He was a long time member of the Professional Handlers Association and served as an officer with them; belonged to the Chattanooga Cocker Club and Atlanta area Cocker Spaniel Club and was a member and served as an officer in the Birmingham Kennel Club. Charles was a Life Member of the American Spaniel Club and a member of the American Dog Show Judges.
He especially enjoyed judging cocker spaniel specialty shows and the American Spaniel Club ”Summer National” which he did 3 different times, as well as the January A.S.C. Flushing Spaniel Show. He enjoyed the game of golf both as a player and a spectator and enjoyed watching sports on television, particularly Washington Nationals baseball, men’s college basketball, tennis and, of course, college football… Alabama college football – Roll Tide !
He is survived by his devoted wife of 13 years, Linda Wallaesa Self, his older and younger sisters, Sue Hopper and Elizabeth Little, his 2 children from his first marriage, Lisa Carboni and Charles ” Todd” Self, and 3 delightful granddaughters. Services will be held Monday July 11th ,2016 in Gardendale, Alabama. The family will receive friends beginning 2 P.M. with memorial services at 3 P.M. in the chapel, followed by burial in Morris Cemetery.
