Indiana Alert: Tippecanoe County to Consider Mandatory Spay/Neuter on October 20

The Tippecanoe County Commission has proposed a rewrite of the county’s animal control code. This includes mandatory sterilization of all dogs and cats over 6 months of age unless the owner obtains a breeder’s permit.

The permit is required for anyone who wishes to own an intact animal, regardless of whether that animal is being bred. A new permit must be obtained every year. Those who do wish to breed would be permitted no more than one litter each year. Anyone found out of compliance must pay a $200 fine.

The only exemption is for those who meet the state definition of “commercial breeder” (those who own at least 20 intact females over one year of age). The proposal specifically states that unless you meet the definition of commercial breeder, the permit will apply.
