AKC, Eukanuba and New York Yankees Work Together to Help Pet Owners in Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

New York, NY – After Hurricane Sandy swept through the tri-state area, many residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut were left in need of basic supplies for their homes and pets. As part of hurricane relief distribution efforts, the New York Yankees organization reached out to request support for companion animals in the region. The AKC immediately contacted its associates at Eukanuba, who were eager to help.

Eukanuba arranged for two truckloads of dog and cat food – 44 tons in all – to be delivered to Yankee Stadium to assist in the New York Yankees hurricane relief distribution efforts.

In a communication from Yankees President Randy Levine, he stated “The New York Yankees salute Dennis and Susan Sprung and the American Kennel Club for their extraordinary generosity in providing much-needed pet food and supplies to the New York Yankees hurricane relief distribution effort.”

“The American Kennel Club was delighted to assist the New York Yankees in helping companion animals affected by Hurricane Sandy, and we thank Eukanuba and Jason Taylor for the collaborative effort to get dog and cat food to those who needed it,” said Dennis Sprung, AKC President and CEO. “We know that the pet owners in the affected areas are very appreciative.”

The AKC is committed to providing continuing assistance to affected companion animals in the region. Since Hurricane Sandy struck, the AKC and AKC CAR have donated $17,000 in funds and supplies to flooded and damaged shelters in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Through the AKC Humane Fund, Inc., the “Sandy Fund” was created to give grants to local AKC clubs and organizations in affected areas to help them assist pet owners recovering from disaster in their own community. The Westminster Kennel Club and the Humane Fund each donated $10,000 to the Sandy Fund, which will provide the seed money to help after Hurricane Sandy and any future disasters. AKC Clubs and organizations that have recently received Sandy Fund grants in this time of urgent need include Mohawk Valley Kennel Club, New England Saint Bernard Club, New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs, Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club, Humane Society of New York, and Last Hope Animal Rescue.   If your organization is in need of assistance, please contact us.
