AKC Pet Disaster Relief Will Help Displaced Pets in Mission, Viejo, CA
MISSION VIEJO, CA — AKC Reunite, the largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service provider in the United States, is pleased to announce its donation of Mission Viejo’s AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer. This life-saving equipment will be available to dispatch to any local disaster scene that needs assistance sheltering pets. This is the 16th trailer donated to the State of California and will further assist local Emergency Management Teams help pets displaced from disasters like the record-setting wildfires in 2020, mudslides and more.
AKC Pet Disaster Relief is a nationwide program sponsored by AKC Reunite, the country’s largest non-profit microchip identification and recovery service. AKC Reunite partners with AKC® Dog Clubs and pet lovers across the country to make these donations a reality. The Mission Viejo trailer was made possible by donations from Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association of Orange County and AKC Reunite.
“The Mission Viejo trailer is our 91st AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer donation. The trailer will provide crucial resources to help the City of Mission Viejo Animal Services team quickly set up emergency sheltering and care for pets displaced by natural or civil disasters,” said Tom Sharp, AKC Reunite CEO. “Safe, effective pet sheltering solutions are critical during an emergency evacuation or immediately following a disaster, and we are pleased to offer this trailer as an important resource to help the citizens of Mission Viejo and their pets.”
The equipment in the AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers helps to create a safe, temporary home-base for at least 65 pets during the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared. The trailers house and deliver essential animal care items including crates and carriers, AKC Reunite microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip scanner, bowls, collars and leashes as well as fans, lighting and a generator, cleaning supplies and maintenance items. These supplies can be used as co-location shelters, where people can evacuate with their pets, as well as emergency animal shelters for displaced animals.
“Our organization is extremely grateful to AKC Reunite and the Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association of Orange County for providing this crucial and lifesaving tool for our community,” stated Kyle Werner of the City of Mission Viejo. “We’re confident that with this additional resource, Mission Viejo will now be better prepared to assist pet owners and their pets in the case of a disaster.”
