Michigan: Ask Committee to Support Bill Prohibiting Breed-Specific Laws on Wednesday, 9/7

The Michigan House Local Government Committee will be considering a bill on Wednesday, September 7, that will prohibit municipalities from enacting breed-specific laws.  Localities may still enact laws regulating dogs, so long as they do not single out specific breeds.

The AKC supports Senate Bill 239, which protects the rights of dog owners while still allowing localities to enact policies that will protect the community.  Breed-specific laws have been considered in many Michigan communities, and this bill will ensure that responsible dog owners and innocent dogs are protected.  Seventeen states currently have laws that prohibit breed-specific legislation.  Visit the Breed-Specific/Dangerous Dog Laws page in the AKC Legislative Action Center for more talking points on this issue.

What You Can Do:

Senate Bill 239 has already passed the Senate, and will be considered in the House Local Government Committee on Wednesday, September 7.   If you reside or participate in dog events in Michigan, please contact the committee and your State Representative and ask them to support House Bill 427.  Committee contact information may be found here.
