Manatee County, FL – “Pet Sales Ban” on Agenda for Tuesday

AKC Legislative Alert

A “pet sales ban” in Manatee County, Florida will be discussed at a workshop on Tuesday, August 14, 2018.  Manatee County residents and members of the public who want to learn more about the proposed ban are urged to attend.

Manatee County staff indicated that a 2018 ordinance has not yet been drafted; therefore, the scope of any proposed “pet sales ban” and whether it will impact local breeders or individuals who may wish to rehome a pet is unknown at this time.  The county attorney’s office will report on litigation in Florida communities where pet shop bans have been enacted.  Click here to view the workshop agenda.

Background information:  A draft ordinance that did not advance in 2016 contained the following provision: “It is in the interest of the public health, safety and general welfare of the citizens of Manatee County to enact this article to regulate, restrict, or prohibit, if necessary, the ownership of animals.” This language was not enacted two years ago; however, it could be proposed again at any time.  Further, certain bans and restrictions on the “retail” sale of pets can potentially also impact home-based and hobby breeders.  Manatee County animal owners are urged to closely monitor all animal-related legislation that may be considered or proposed by their county and city governments.

What you can do:  Manatee County residents and members of the public who want to learn more about the proposed “pet sales ban” should attend the workshop.  Sign in on a speaker’s list at the door prior to commencement of the meeting if you wish to be recognized to speak.

Date:  August 14, 2018, 9:00 a.m.  The pet sales ban is the second item on the agenda.

Location:  County Administrative Center, 1112 Manatee Ave. W., 4th Floor, Bradenton, FL 34205.  The meeting could be moved to the first floor if attendance is high.
