Results From The Kennel Club Gundog Working Test at Chatsworth

The Kennel Club has held its Gundog Working Test at the Chatsworth House estate, Derbyshire, and the success of the event has shown that the sport is more popular than ever among gundog owners.

Owners and their dogs attended the five day event, which included a specially designed gundog training day, with many of the world’s most talented and promising gundogs in attendance. The event saw a number of gundog tests, including the Young Handler Test and International Retriever Team Event as well as the Novice and Open Retriever, Spaniel and Hunt, Point, Retrieve Tests.

Eight international teams took part in the International Retriever Team Test, with Italy attending for the first time this year, bringing the crème de la crème of the gundog world together to compete.

The event opened with the gundog training day for novice handlers, which saw around 60 dogs, both Spaniels and Retrievers, put through their paces alongside their owners.

The event was sponsored by Judge’s Choice, and awards were kindly presented by the Duchess of Devonshire, along with Anne Heading, the Chairman of the Working Party for the Gundog Working Test, and Kennel Club Chairman Steve Dean.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “The Kennel Club Gundog Working Test showcases many of this country’s most talented gundogs and handlers, and it is encouraging to see so many of these handlers showing off their abilities and the wonderful relationships they have with their dogs.

“The competition aims to assess the working abilities of different gundog breeds and is very much in line with the Kennel Club’s ‘Fit for Function, Fit for Life’ campaign, in terms of encouraging putting the dogs’ natural instincts to good use to work well for their owner or handler.  All of the competitors this year should be very proud of their achievements, and we wish them a long and successful career in the sport.”
