Less Than A Week Left For Looe Dog Owners To Have Their Say On Restrictions

Dog owners in Looe, Cornwall, are being urged to have their say on proposed restrictions which could see a total ban on dogs on Hannafore Beach, an area currently enjoyed by many responsible dog owners.

Kennel Club campaign group, KC Dog, in place to help responsible dog owners protect their rights, is alerting dog owners in the area about a consultation which aims to assess the need to restrict access to the beach for dogs, following reported issues of dog fouling and dogs being ‘out of control’ on the beach. The consultation, being run by Looe Town Council, runs until Tuesday 27th August so it is vital that owners respond quickly.

Local dog owner, Cynthia McCracken, who walks her dog at Hannafore beach, said: “It is a shame the council is looking to restrict dogs in the area further, particularly when the issues arise because of the irresponsible minority who do not pick up after their dogs.  The beach is a great place for dogs to get some good off-lead exercise, which they need to keep them fit and healthy, and local dog owners would love to see the council working with us towards more constructive solutions rather than potentially implementing a blanket ban which penalises the responsible majority.

“Dog owners pay the same council tax as everyone else, and yet the amenities are restricted for us in the area.  On top of this, further dog bans around Looe will leave holidaymakers who like to come here with their dogs with nowhere to go.  This would result in people having to leave dogs in cars, which presents a number of welfare implications, or dog owning tourists deciding not to come here which would be disastrous for the area.”

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “With less than a week until the consultation closes, responses are needed quickly and we would strongly recommend that as many people as possible have their say on these potential restrictions, as it would affect anyone who makes use of the public space at Hannafore Beach.

The consultation closes on Tuesday 27th August.  To have your say, visit www.looetowncouncil.gov.uk/notices.htm.
