Across the country, American Kennel Club conformation clubs are under strain. Rising costs and shrinking venue options are part of the story, but behind the scenes, most clubs are fighting a quieter, more personal battle: people problems.

Clubs everywhere face the same intertwined challenges:

• Declining and aging membership

• Volunteer burnout

• Club cultures that unintentionally push new people away

The good news? These challenges are solvable, and many clubs are already proving what works.

Challenge #1:

Shrinking Membership and an Aging Core

Most clubs don’t lack members on paper. They lack active, energized, involved people. Some of the most common barriers are:

• New exhibitors don’t know clubs exist or don’t feel welcome

• Membership processes feel outdated or intimidating

• Meetings feel procedural instead of purposeful

• Younger exhibitors see clubs as “something older people do later”

• The benefits of joining are unclear

Look around any show and you’ll see exactly who’s missing from most clubs: young owner-handlers, parents of Juniors, and performance exhibitors curious about conformation. These are future members and future leaders, but no one’s personally inviting them into the club.

They happened in Orlando in December, though most people who attended the AKC Championship week of shows had no idea what was going on.

They happen at most of the major conformation clusters–Houston, Louisville, Phoenix, the Peach Blossom Cluster in Perry, GA, etc. Again, most of the exhibitors don’t know what was going on at them.

If you’re a conformation exhibitor, you need to know what’s going on; and you need to volunteer to help.

What’s going on? Judges’ education seminars. They’re held at the major dog show clusters across America because those shows usually have large entries and deep quality, two things that judges wishing to learn about different breeds need.

Having a show dog looks so easy–slap on a lead, stand still, look pretty, run around, down and back, and collect your ribbons. In reality, those who consistently have top-winning dogs understand that having a show dog isn’t easy at all–it’s planning, breeding, socializing, training, conditioning, and timing.

There are a lot of dogs being shown–there are relatively few show dogs.

Most people who show dogs do it as a hobby. They may occasionally have a dog that does some nice winning, but that’s the exception, not the rule. The “dogs being shown” dogs may or may not know what’s expected of them in the ring, they may or may not be at optimal weight and appropriately muscled, they may or may not be well-groomed, and they may or may not have a handler who’s confident and competent. They are dogs being shown, but not really show dogs. The top conformation handlers, whether they’re amateur or professional, understand that there’s more to having a show dog than meets the eye.

Do you watch Groups when you go to a show? It’s one of the best ways to improve your handling skills, yet many people don’t take advantage of this learning opportunity.

Why should you watch Groups? There are so many reasons – you can find friends and learn about other breeds by sitting ringside and asking questions. You can train your eye on movement more easily because the rings are bigger, so the dogs move more. And you can watch the great owner-handlers and professional handlers, so you can learn how to showcase your dog like they do.

Here’s what you won’t see them do – fumble with their lead, struggle to show the bite, or yank their dog around on the move. Those are very common mistakes that owner-handlers make, and it makes them look like novices in the ring. Even worse, it keeps the judge from being able to easily evaluate the quality of their dog.

When most people talk about “show condition” they’re talking about maturity and coat. Some do recognize the need for good muscle tone, so they use a treadmill or they road work their dogs. For most dogs in the ring, muscle condition seems to be an afterthought on the part of their owners. Dogs go into the show ring with muscle tone that comes from lounging, not working, and the judge never really gets to see their full potential.

Muscle condition is the key to your dog being able to hold a beautiful show stack, and gait to their maximum ability. If you want to showcase your dog to their best advantage, you need to create and stick to a plan to get them into condition–and keep them in condition. It doesn’t have to be the rock-hard condition of a dog that spent the winter putting in miles every day in front of a rig or sled. It does have to be condition that produces strong, flexible muscles, especially in the topline, abdomen, and pelvic girdle–and you can achieve that condition in the comfort of your own home and yard.

Do you ever see your dog nail a perfect stack on their own? Built correctly, many dogs do–and it doesn’t last very long when it happens, right? They get excited about something–maybe a squirrel, or a cat, or a leaf blowing in the next county–and they pull themselves up into full alertness. Once the fascination fades, which nearly always happens before you can get a picture of it, that beautiful free stack is gone.

The dogs are the focus. You are totally correct about that. And the judge is supposed to be looking at the dogs. You are totally correct about that, too.

And you’re in the picture, too, so how you present yourself and what you wear matters–a lot!

You can start arguing if you want, but it won’t do you any good. When the judge is looking at your dog and you’re on the top end of the lead, the judge is seeing you. And judges are human, which means that even if they don’t try to, they’ll form an opinion of your appearance.

Your goal is to not detract from your dog. Your goal is to complement your dog. Your goal is to be as well-groomed as your dog, so you both shine.

Not everyone can go out and load up on St. John or Hugo Boss suits, and not everyone would look good in them anyway, so this article is all about ways you can enhance your style without breaking the bank.
