I have noticed, in my fifty years of going to dog shows, that the same people seem to come up with good dogs year after year.

It seems that a very small percentage of the fancy–maybe ten percent and that may be high–have a green thumb in either breeding or finding good dogs. There is a very definite talent required to breed or find good dogs. This same small percentage of the dog breeder and exhibitor population are the ones that usually stick, though thick and thin, and you see them back year after year with the good ones. These dogs do not necessarily have to be Best in Show or Group contenders, but they are dogs that are very competitive in their breed. The dog show starts at the breed level. Some breeds get overlooked because they are not what you call the glamorous breeds, but when one that’s good enough comes along, he, like cream, rises to the top if he is shown long enough and not given up on by his owners or handler.

 I have noticed breeds rise to the top when years ago they were not competitive. Let us take a breed like Brussels Griffons. Here is a breed that in the last thirty-five to forty years has come from unkempt and unsound little dogs to place where they are now consistent Best In Show winners. [Editor’s note: Remember this was 1993] You can put Affenpinchers in the same category; how many of them were noticed enough to win Best In Shows? We can take a look at the Bichon Frisé of thirty-five years ago. They were nice little lap dogs but not considered top show dogs. Look what a small group of people have done with this breed. Decades ago, a small group of people got behind Poodles and look what has happened with them. The same goes for the Siberian Husky. It was not a breed that was winning Best in Shows. However, look what happened to them when a few clever breeders got going.

Breeds go up and down. Boston Terriers were in their heyday, along with Yorkies, back in the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s. There were some really outstanding dog people breeding them.

I believe the reason breeds go up and down in quality is because of the talent, or lack of it, of the people breeding and promoting these breeds. One great breeder can put a breed on the map. Look at what Julia Gasow has done for English Springer Spaniels. Pat Craige [now Trotter] has done that for Norwegian Elkhounds.

I also find this in key people other than the well-known breeders of our sport. Look at the influence a person like Peter Green has made in promoting great Norwich, Lakeland and Wire Fox Terrier stud dogs. Look at George Ward’s influence on the Terrier scene in the last sixty years. Look at Anne Clark’s influence in Poodles, as well as the great Frank Sabella’s influence, along with so many more great Poodle breeders, handlers and exhibitors of the right kind.

Let us look at a man that maybe is not known as a great breeder of his favorite breed–or maybe he is for all I know–through his advice and expertise, but a great spokesman, representative and handler of his breed, Mr. Jim Moses. Jim has attended German Shepherd Specialty Shows since he was a young kid. Jim knows the ins and outs and has the keen eye to pick up on the individual specimens that he wants to promote and handle. He is a master of his trade. I have personally never seen anyone better than Jimmy Moses in what he does. Jimmy is polite and humble, and yet has that spark to get out and fight like a tiger for his charges and what he believes in. Jimmy is a winner. I feel myself lucky to know him.

There are so many more like Jimmy Moses that it would be impossible to name them all. In fact, I am positive that I have personally met only one one-hundredth or less of them. However, my hat is off to them, wherever they are throughout the world. These are the people who keep the wheels turning through thick and thin. These are the ones that sacrifice and do so much more than just chase blue ribbons. These are the people that I love and feel comfortable with, not the glory seekers and so-called important people who use the game for their own aggrandizement.

You see people gliding along show grounds, picking up on all the gossip. These are the people who think they are hip and know everything that is happening before it happens. These people are the ones that look with disdain at the talented and dedicated who may not be the type of people that have to be in the limelight or may not be the heavy spenders and party-goers of our sport.

Let us keep these people, who have the talent and who do the self-sacrificing, from being buried under the avalanche of fancy advertising and the promotion of mediocrity.

I love the people that fight for what they believe in and go for it, through all kinds of setbacks and ridicule.

There are probably some people that will read this the wrong way. I do not hold it against the people that have the means to afford heavy advertising and attend the parties in their finery as long as they are promoting the right stuff; the people whose motives are to promote the best, and who know and recognize what the right stuff is when they see it.

The people that promote mediocrity and do not know the difference are the people that need help, but sometimes are blind to the fact that they need it.

It takes all kinds of people in our sport and there are definitely all kinds. This is what makes it so interesting and certainly never boring. If you had a dog show of nothing but good ones it would be a pleasure, however, it never will be that way.

There are people today that come to the shows with dogs that are not competitive in the show ring, that will realize that they are not competitive and in five years will be competitive because they have the talent and perseverance to find and get the right dogs. I would still guess this to be about ten percent of those that show dogs. Then there are the great majority of newcomers with dogs not good enough that will quit for one reason or another, and some even blame the judges for not recognizing their dogs that they love so much.

I get great enjoyment in trying to help people get going in the right direction in the breeds I know well.

Some of these people have the talent and will listen to the people who know. The majority will be in it for six months to a year and then they will be telling you how to do it. I guess this is human nature and it will be this way forever.

Again, my hat is off to people like Jimmy Moses, and the ten percent. You make keep the wheels turning.

These days show photographers are taken for granted. That final point, first major, there’s always someone on hand to commemorate the big occasion. Likewise, we can rest assured that the forthcoming pictures will be topnotch, professional quality. Dog show photography has actually been around so long that, in more than one case, it has become a family business.

Therefore it’s good to remember William Brown, the guy who paved the way for all this. Well actually, if we want to get technical, we should start by thanking George Foley. Foley wasn’t the first dog show superintendent, but back in early 1920s he was the guy that took management to a new level by implementing policies and protocols that guaranteed standardized efficiency everywhere, every weekend. For example, he was instrumental in getting PHA up and running, therefore setting a bar for what to expect when hiring a professional handler. He also masterminded the concept of Children’s Handling Competition thereby calling a halt to the bands of roving, unsupervised kids that overran his orderly little dog show utopia every weekend.

So back to the photography biz. Back in 1925 William Brown first approached Foley, who was then titled President of the Foley Dog Show Organization, for permission to become the official photographer of the winners at his shows. Photography was nothing new by the ‘20s, and Foley had been around the block a few times with various scammers billing themselves as experts and pros on this turf. Typically, they collected deposits or even full payments for photos that were never sent, often because they didn’t bother loading any film in the camera. Let’s just say that there were enough variations on this con to make exhibitors wary of the deal and convince Foley that professional show photos were an all-round problem to avoid.

So when William Brown came knocking on his door the answer was a resounding ‘no thank you’. But the thing with Brown was patience and persistence. Both are vital traits for a photographer, even though Brown happened to be a building contractor who was simply obsessed with the twin passions of dogs and photography since age 12.

Obviously, Foley eventually relented. The demand for this service was simply too big to ignore, and “Brownie” became the sport’s first official show photographer. Over the next 40 years he snapped thousands of pictures, somehow getting that spark out of dead tired dogs and smiles out of fatally grumpy judges. Very often, his sidekick took over this part of the task. Possibly, a major reason why Brownie quickly gained trust in this dodgy business was the presence of his beloved Airedale at his side. Finding the man with the camera at shows was simply a matter of spotting the guy with the Airedale trotting beside him.

He knew his craft, which meant recognizing his subject’s faults and knowing how to minimize them on film. He often quoted advice to novices trying to break into the biz; he said a secret was to know every standard by heart and be prepared for endless hours of walking around shows and driving to the next one.

Like his equally acclaimed colleagues Joan Ludwig and Rudolph Tauskey, he also contributed his talents to archiving the great show dogs of his day, among them the top winning Min Pin of the early ‘60s, Ch. Rebel Roc’s Casanova von Kurt, the top Airedale of the late ‘50s, Ch. Westhay Fiona of Harham, the celebrated Dane, Ch. Honey Hollow Stormi Rudio, a string of top winning Rudel Greyhounds, and many of the great Boxers from the Salgray and Quality Hill kennels.

It seems only fitting that he died doing what he loved most. Arriving early at the 1964 Philadelphia KC show, he collapsed while setting up his equipment and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. By then, dog show photography had ascended to the realm of a respectable, legitimate, and highly competitive business. But who knows if or when that would have happened without William Brown.

We are sad to report the passing of the great Border Collie, GCHP2 Majestic Elite Clever Endeavor PT.

Piloted by Jamie Clute and Haley Whitcomb, Slick was the winner of 50 All Breed Best in Shows and 2 National Specialty Best of Breeds. He was the winner of the 2018 Westminster KC Herding Group and the 2018 AKC National Championship Herding Group. Beyond Slick’s accolades, he was the constant companion to Jamie and Haley Whitcomb after his show career concluded.

The Canine Chronicle extends our most sincere condolences to Slick’s owners Ricky Johnson and Frank Baylis,  breeder and owner Ronni Delay and handlers Jamie Clute and Haley Whitcomb on the loss of their beloved Slick.

During the ‘70s there was a whole new wave of young judges trying to find their way in the dog show world. We all studied standards, watched the AKC breed videos (remember them?), went to Nationals, Specialties, and were focused on hitting seminars/symposiums everywhere we could! It seems, looking back then, there was a judges workshop around every corner!

I headed up one for the Long Island crowd and knew firsthand how difficult it was to coordinate getting quality presenters and a suitable attendance. One of the very best of these judges groups was the Tri-State group started and maintained by Eleanor (Ellie) Rotman. Now Ellie was not a shrinking violet, and I’m still mystified about how she did it…but she brought in the best of the best for her presentations.

She was a physiologist by profession, working with children, predominantly in a school setting. She had a big outgoing personality and wonderful good looks to go with it. She was also exuberant and energetic to boot! Her charm secured some of the areas preeminent breeders, together with their dogs, for our programs. It was not an easy task to get them mid-week somewhere in the middle of New Jersey. It was always a late night with endless questions and much knowledge shared.

Ellie started her career in dogs with obedience, with her first Poodles. This led to her applying for her obedience approval. She enjoyed judging obedience for many years before branching out to the conformation ring. She was a very popular judge due to her sunny disposition and her friendly manor with dogs and exhibitors alike. One of her efforts was forming the Non-Sporting Group of the Garden State association, which was one of the first group clubs and is still active today. I know she did all Toys and all Non-Sporting and was one of my favorite traveling companions to the many shows we judged together.

Ellie was married to Bert and they had one son, Scott, who was the light of their lives. She and her husband loved playing golf and one of the highlights of her judging career was being invited to judge the prestigious Windsor Kennel Club Show in England. Being in the British Isles was, of course, a wonderful opportunity to hop over to Scotland and play golf on the fabled St. Andrews Course. She didn’t break any records, but it was a dream come true for a dedicated golfer.

A close friend of Ellie was Desi Murphy and he sends me what he wants everyone to know about our dear friend:

“There are so many wonderful memories of Ellie. In all the years of showing to her I do not remember the wins or loses, just the fun of showing to her. She had a way of making everyone who entered her ring that they were at a Garden Party! She made the novice feel they were on a par with the old pros. She would not allow anybody not to enjoy the time in her ring. Even the spectators outside her ring were drawn into party mode. She had a way of making a starting novice feel they were an important part of the show.”

Our sport is deeply rooted in history and tradi- tion. The great dogs and great dog people are written about in books and magazines, and stories about them are passed on whenever dog show people gather. Some achieve almost legendary status. Most of us, if we are lucky, may get to know one such individual well. Michael Canalizo grew up in the sport and built a career associated with two legends: one a person, and one a dog bred from her lines. Of course, the person was Sunny Shay of Grandeur Afghans, and the dog was the Number One Hound of all time, Ch. Tryst of Grandeur. Along the way, Michael Canalizo has become a bit of a legend himself, though he’d never describe himself that way.

Canalizo, who now lives in Mill Neck, N.Y. was born into a dog show family. The first dog he remembers was a large tri-color male Rough Collie, who joined the family about a year before Canalizo himself. In the 1950s, most families would probably have purchased a collie puppy from a news- paper classified ad; but Jim and Lee Canalizo acquired “Prince” from Florence Bell Ilch. Her Bellhaven Kennels in Red Bank, N.J. had imported or produced champion after champion, including the only collie ever to go Best in Show at Westminster.

Canalizo describes his family as “your typical middle class family of five,” but they were more often found at dog shows on a weekend than at a ballfield. “We always had purebred dogs in the house,” Canalizo recalls. “Afghans were com- pletely my mother’s decision. They arrived in 1961, and never left!” That first Afghan led to a breeding program under the Kandahara kennel name.

Lee Canalizo wrote movingly of acquiring that first Afghan in “Looking Back with Lee” in the May 2010 Ca- nine Chronicle. Her family had suffered the loss of a young child, and wanted a dog to help lift their spirits. Drawn to Afghans by their “exotic, mystical” appearance, Lee Canal- izo saw an ad for Grandeur Kennels on Long Island, N.Y. It wasn’t far from the Canalizo’s home, and so the family vis- ited Sunny Shay to meet her dogs. At the time, Shay had bred Afghans for twenty years, but she hadn’t come from a dog family, or wealth, or New York society. She had talent, drive, and incredible skill as a handler. Shay won her first Westminster group in 1950, and in 1957, she became the second breeder/owner/ handler to go Best in Show at the Garden. The first was Herman Mellenthin with the black Cocker Spaniel, Ch. My Own Brucie; Shay accomplished this with her Ch. Shirkhan of Grandeur.

The Canalizos bought a Grandeur bitch, Babu Bamn of Grandeur. Mike Canalizo remembers his father asking Sunny Shay what the difference was between a pet puppy and a show prospect (other than the price). Shay’s answer was “buy the show dog— you’ll see the world!”
