The Best By Date is found on the middle top of the back of each bag. This expanded voluntary recall is being issued due to some of the product lots testing positive for Salmonella through random and targeted sampling of finished product, including by the firm and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs; however, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure. Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction.

Purina is taking this action after receiving two contacts about two separate confirmed cases of a dog exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the diet, to date. Once taken off the diet, each of these dogs recovered.

The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals and other select retailers with the ability to validate a prescription.

Bags of PPVD EL with the UPC Code and Production Code below should be immediately discarded.

The Kroger Co. issued a recall on Saturday of select varieties of dog and cat food sold in some of its stores, mostly in the South and Midwest, because the products may contain the toxic chemical aflatoxin.
The affected product includes certain Pet Pride, Old Yeller and Kroger Value brands with Oct. 23, 2011 and Oct. 24, 2011 sell by dates.
Kroger stores in the following states are included in this recall:
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
The recall also includes Dillons and Gerbes stores in Kansas and Missouri; Baker’s stores in Nebraska; Food 4 Less stores in Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana (Chicago area); and Jay C, Hilander, Owen’s, Pay Less and Scott’s stores in Illinois and Indiana.
The Kroger Co. manufactured the recalled pet food items at its own facility in Springfield, Tenn., according to company spokeswoman Denise Osterhues. No other manufacturers are included in this recall.
The recalled products may contain aflatoxin, a naturally occurring toxic chemical by-product from the growth of the fungus Aspergillus flavus on corn and other crops.
Pet owners are advised to contact their veterinarian if their dog or cat shows any signs of illness, including sluggishness or lethargy, combined with a reluctance to eat, yellowish tint to the eyes and/or gums and severe or bloody diarrhea.
Kroger reported that it is using its Customer Recall Notification system to alert customers who many have purchased a recalled item. Customers who have purchased a recalled item should stop using the product and return it to a store for a full refund or replacement.
The following is a complete list of the recalled items:
