This past weekend the Afghan Hound world lost one of its most ardent supporters. Peter Belmont, of Elmo Afghan Hounds. died in what police are calling a homicide.

Peter had been a presence in the breed for 50 some odd years. He bred many Champions, top sires and top dams. More importantly his stock started many successful kennels through the years. Peter believed in this breed and in recent years was heartbroken over what he felt was the demise of the Afghan Hound.

At the time Peter got started in this sport there were many mentors for him to glean knowledge from, and this is exactly what he did. Later he passed this knowledge on to those who would listen. In a conversation with a dear friend of mine we discussed how the people who started with Peter remained his friend through the years. Not many breeders can say that. He must have been doing something right, and something people today could take a lesson from.

Professionally Peter was an educator. He taught art at Wichita State University until his recent retirement. His artwork was well known and greatly desired by Afghan enthusiasts.

Sadly his death has brought out that big bad trait in dog people…gossip. I don’t know why there’s this contest in our sport as to who knows the most about anything first; whether true or not. In this case many stories have appeared on Facebook. As of yesterday, the Kansas City police have stated that no information about the circumstances of Peter Belmont’s death has been or will be given out to anyone at this time.

I hope my fellow Afghan Hound people will take time to think of the tragedy of losing one of our breeds oldest friends and while we’re at it say a prayer for all the children who have horribly and needlessly lost their lives last week. It has not been a good week.

New York, NY — The American Kennel Club® announced today the seven group recipients of the 2012 AKC® Breeder of the Year Award. The award honors breeders who have dedicated their lives to improving the health, temperament and quality of purebred dogs.

“The AKC Breeder of the Year Award celebrates AKC’s distinguished breeders and we’re proud to honor seven outstanding finalists this year,” said Michael Canalizo, AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Event Manager. “The group winners represent the diversity of our sport, spanning generations and getting their start in dogs many different ways, yet all are the best of the best when it comes to responsibly breeding healthy, beautiful and functional dogs.”

A breeder is chosen from each of the seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. The individual group recipients will receive a medallion in recognition of their achievements on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando, Fla. At the end of the presentation the 2012 AKC Breeder of the Year will be announced. Additionally, a canine portraitist will be commissioned to commemorate a prominent dog from the recipient’s kennel, and their name will be inscribed on a perpetual trophy and plaque on permanent display at the AKC headquarters in New York City.

The Group Winners Are:

Sporting Group: Dr. Dana Massey, Win’Weim Weimaraners

Dana has lived with Weimaraners since 1950 and is grateful for the mentoring she has received from Chris Grisell (Nani’s) and Judy Colan (Colsidex). Dana has owned and/or bred Weimaraners consistently in the Top 10, plus BIS, WCA Hall of Fame, and top producers. Additionally, Win’Weim dogs have won more than 20 Bests in Futurity/Maturity awards. A firm believer in the versatility of sporting dogs, she is proud that her dogs have AKC VCD1, TDX, SH with MH legs, and over 85 AKC performance titles plus several WCA Versatile Excellent designations.

Hound Group: Alicia Hanna, Kimani Rhodesian Ridgebacks

Alicia acquired her first dog in 1963 establishing her small kennel in Chester, New Jersey, where she still resides. She won her first national specialty in 1968 with a dog from her first litter; her name was Kimani, since then Kimani-registered dogs have produced over 700 AKC champions. She has bred, owned, and/or handled the RRCUS national-specialty BIS-winning dogs an unprecedented 12 times, and has retired every national specialty conformation challenge trophy, including the Best in National Specialty Trophy twice.

Working Group: Lynn Brady and Connie Townsend, Szumeria Kuvasz

They have remained active in the KCA, serving in many leadership roles. Szumeria has achieved an impressive record, including over 45 BIS, 36 earned by GCh. Szumeria’s Wildwood Silver SixPence, and over 125 AKC champions and multiple Hall of Fame sires and dams. Three times they have owned and/or bred the top-winning Kuvasz in breed history.

Terrier Group: James W. Smith, Absolutely Smooth Fox Terriers

Jim attended his first dog show with a Dalmatian in 1956 and has been involved in the sport ever since. He quickly gravitated to the terrier rings and acquired a Wire Fox Terrier in 1957. His first Smooth came in 1962. In 1999, he acquired a Smooth from Eddie Boyes, and Jim’s interest and involvement has proceeded full speed ever since. Absolutely has produced over 50 bred, owned, and campaigned champions, Best in Show dogs, national and regional specialty winners, and numerous group winners. Preservation and maintenance of the breed are paramount, while adherence to the standard is constantly reviewed.

Toy Group: Tammy and John Simon, Ta-Jon Maltese

Non-Sporting Group: Krista Nuovo, Delamer Schipperkes

Krista has bred five national BOB winners, five National BOS, numerous National WD, WB and BW, and multiple Bests in Sweepstakes and Bests in Futurities. Delamer kennels bred the all-time top Best in Show–winning Schipperke, BIS BISS Ch. Delamer Beach Blanket Baby, with 18 Bests in Show.

By David Frei · www.westminsterkennelclub.org

The spectacular rolling hills of Tamarack Game Preserve in New York’s Dutchess County, beautiful blue skies, incredible views of the Berkshires in the distance, and a cooling breeze provided all the ingredients for largest entry ever for the Westminster Kennel Club’s 5th Annual Hunting Test on September 23, 2012.

With 30 dogs and a full parking lot, Hunting Test Chairman Steven M. Bedford and his committee welcomed the canine and human competitors, as well as Doug Ljundgren, vice president of AKC Performance Events. The day included a lunch provided by the club on the grounds.

The tests went off smoothly under Judges Janet McMillan Zwirko and Jim Dwyer (Master/Senior Hunting), and Jim MacWalter and Bill Fralick (Junior Hunting). And when he day was done, 12 of the entries had earned qualifying scores – three Master Hunters, one Senior Hunter, and eight Junior Hunters.

“Our Founding Fathers should have been here,” said Mr. Bedford. “This is exactly what they had envisioned when the created this club in 1877 – great dogs, wonderful camaraderie, and a spectacular setting. It just doesn’t get any better than this.”

While the world knows Westminster for its famous all breed dog show held every year since 1877 at Madison Square Garden, The Westminster Kennel Club was in fact the first (2007) and is still the only all breed kennel club to hold an American Kennel Club licensed hunting test for pointing breeds. This was its annual return to its sporting dog roots.

The Westminster Kennel Club was begun back in the mid-1870’s as a gentlemen’s sporting club, with its primary activity being bird hunting, primarily with pointing breeds.

Beginning in the late 1800s, Westminster gradually began to shift its focus a bit to that of the dog show ring. But the original intent of the club’s forefathers remained firmly evident: protect and promote the purebred dog and its abilities to do what it was bred to do.

A hundred years later, in 1986, the American Kennel Club created a hunting test and Westminster hosted the first demonstration in Pine Plains, NY.

Many specialty clubs have staged hunting tests since then, but up until September of 2008, no all breed club had done so. It was appropriate that the Westminster Kennel Club, the country’s oldest organization dedicated to the sport of purebred dogs, would do the honors and open the way for other all breed clubs to follow.

By Lisa Dube Forman

Have you recently heard this question ringside at a dog show? Perhaps even you have asked this a hundred times over. More often than not, it is posed rhetorically as a reflection or criticism of your observation.

I am referencing the deliberations and decisions made by the AKC dog show judge. We all at one time or another have stood ringside and observed judges leaving us to shake our heads while muttering, “I must have missed something!” Even more frustrating is attending our breed specialties and we are altogether befuddled. Subsequently, this leaves us to inquire of our friends, “What are they looking for?” The judges explanation is not forthcoming unless you attend a dinner where the judge says a few words about their selections, or you may read it later in the club’s publication.

We can easily solve this issue while improving upon the adjudication process. In recent times there has been debates about adopting a few practices of the FEDERATION CYNOLOGIQUE INTERNATIONALE (FCI). For instance, we now offer a Reserve Best in Show and although I do not see our classes being restructured, I believe we can and should adopt one other highly useful and logical practice. In my opinion, we need to embrace and welcome customary judge’s critiques and grading on every entry. This is a valuable tool for exhibitors, judges, and AKC Representatives as well. The latter I will explain further on. For those who are unfamiliar with FCI Regulations for Show Judges, “The candidate has to produce a consequent critique with the good and less good points of the outline and movement of the dogs and he must pay attention to the health and welfare of the dog.”

From there the FCI qualifications given by the judges must correspond to the following definitions:

EXCELLENT may only be awarded to a dog which comes very close to the ideal standard of the breed, which is presented in excellent condition, displays a harmonious, well-balanced temperament, is of high class and has excellent posture. Its superior characteristics in respect of its breed permit that minor imperfections can be ignored; it must however have the typical features of its sex.

VERY GOOD may only be awarded to a dog that possesses the typical features of its breed, which has well-balanced proportions and is in correct condition. A few minor faults may be tolerated. This award can only be granted to a dog that shows class.

GOOD is to be awarded to a dog that possesses the main features of its breed. The good points should outweigh the faults so that the dog can be considered a good representative of its breed.

SUFFICIENT should be awarded to a dog which corresponds adequately to its breed, without possessing the generally accepted characteristics or whose physical condition leaves a lot to be desired.

DISQUALIFIED must be awarded to a dog which does not correspond to the type required by the breed standard; which shows a behaviour clearly not in line with its standard or which behaves aggressively; which has testicular abnormalities; which has a jaw anomaly; which shows a colour or coat structure that is not according to the breed standard or clearly shows signs of albinism. This qualification shall also be awarded to dogs that correspond so little to a single feature of the breed that their health is threatened. It should furthermore be awarded to dogs that show disqualifying faults in regard to the breed standard. The reason the dog was rated DISQUALIFIED has to be stated in the judge’s report.

Mandatory judging critiques have numerous advantages with the most obvious being that exhibitors receive an immediate explanation and grade. Moreover, the process can strengthen the overall quality of the judges pool. When a judge has to grade and explain ‘why they did what they did,’ it may accentuate incompetence. Similarly, the process benefits both Judges and AKC Executive Field Representatives. The critique is a written opinion and rating serving as a tool to enforce an AKC Field Rep’s evaluation on a permit or regular status judge. Likewise, it can serve as validation for a judge’s awards when confronted and questioned by an AKC Field Rep hopefully preventing an unfair, unfavorable evaluation. Additionally, the elaborating process and grading will perhaps give some judges pause and possibly prevent their accepting assignments in breeds they are uncertain and or are unqualified for. This sure sounds better than our current practice where we have judges quickly, in a cloak of secrecy, flicking fingers at placements and awards and rush off to fill out their judging book. They hand out the satin ribbons and finito! Onto the next breed!

WKC STREAMING VIDEO: Live and complete in 2013

You want it all? You want it live? Westminster has it for you in 2013.

The 137th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will produce live coverage via streaming video on its website of all of the breed judging in each of the 187 breeds and varieties. Since 2005, breed judging highlights have been carried on the website on streaming video on a delayed basis, but this year, for the first time, this important part of the show will be covered live and in its entirety with real-time posting on www.westminsterkennelclub.org.

Shortly after its live presentation, that streaming video will then be permanently available for viewing on the website for those who might not have had the opportunity to view it live or for those who just want to see their favorite breeds in competition once again.

More than a million visitors a year have logged on to the Westminster website every year since 2005 during the dog show to view taped breed judging highlights of their favorite breeds, delayed by about two hours from the live competition.

Watch the website for details (www.westminsterkennelclub.org).
